Type-Moon's Tournament Phantasm is a fighting game created for Notes. (Type-Moon) in colaboration with Arc System Works and French Bread, the game features characters for most of the Type-Moon's works such has the Fate series, Tsukihime, Melty Blood, Kara no Kyoukai or Mahou Tsukai no Yoru for examples. In terms of gameplay is similar to the Melty Blood series with some significant differences.

Story[]

One day the old man Zelretch was bored and for his amusment he uses the power of the Second Magic to summon a powerful Reality Marble that converge different places across the worlds of the Kaleidoscope teleporting their inhabitants in the process, now he host the brand-new Tournament Phantasm, a fighting tourney where the guests fights each other....just that nobody of them wants to participate and instead they spend their time fooling around.

As the story is disclosed, it is particularly oriented mainly to comedy and the different reactions of the characters of the different franchises when they meet, moving away from the darker stories of their respective series, compare it with the Carnival Phantasm anime or the BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle's story mode.

Gameplay[]

Tournament Phantasm's gameplay is very similar to the one of Melty Blood series (mainly the last interation Type Lumina) but with some unique mechanics. The control is divided with four buttons, Light, Medium, Heavy and Special, the first three has a straightforward definition are just what they names means but the Special button is actually like the Drive button from BlazBlue series with each characters having different actions attached to this move, for example Shiki Tohno can perform attacks that deals critical hit, Okita can use a quick teleport but if she uses the move many times in a row she can be fatigued blocking that ability and reducing her mobility, Bazett can enhance her fists and legs for deal additional damage and adding extra propierties to some moves, etc.

The power bar (called Magic Circuits, just like Melty Blood and Unlimited Codes) can be used for the usuals EX and Super moves (called Burst Drive), but also has other uses such like the Awakening status, a comeback mechanic that can be triggered with full gauge, works similar to Blood Heat buffing the character damage, healing the character for a while, increasing their speed and mobility and unlocking a badass-looking Super-Super Special Move named Awakened Phantasm, is an instant kill move thought not only consumes all your gauge (and losing the Awakening status in the process) but its complicated to land with a long startup being easy punishable.

Other gauge is the Guard Gauge that is for the defensive actions, one of the actions is the Special Guard, a more powerful block that ignores chipp damage, the gauge will slowly deplets holding the button (the right trigger) but if you use the Special Guard in the correct situations at the perfect moment you will not spend the gauge, the gauge will refills faster when taking damage. Other action is the Counter Grab, you can escape for the grabs using a 25% of the gauge and also allows you to punish the opponent's throw intent, also has Moon Burst action, a Combo Breaker mechanic that can be used with full guard meter and pressing all the four buttons when getting hitted launching the opponent far away. The Guard Gauge and the Magic Circuit Gauge can be breaked with the Crush Blow, a move that spends 50% of the gauge (technically is also a Burst Drive), the move has two variants one with a purple glow for Circuit Break and other with blue glow for Guard Break, both moves also deals big damage but has slow startup so can only be used safe in certain moments.

The game also has the Moon Styles coming from the Actress Again series in Melty Blood being Crescent, Half and Full Moon styles (with an secret EX style and a even-more-secret and exclusive for some characters called "Secret EX") but the way they work are different, the Crescent Moon Style still has an enfasing in the aggresive playstyle gaining more energy for the Magic Circuit Gauge when performing combos and taking damage but obtaining less for taking damage and having a penalization for the defensive actions like backdashing and not attacking for a while, gains a dash attack, also gives a Counter Attack that can be activated after parrying a move with a perfect block pressing two of any of the three main buttons consuming 25% of the power bar and a fast recovery mashing any button in the air or ground after getting damage and finally can perform airdash cancels. The Full Moon Style is for defensive playstyle obtaining less energy for the gauge attacking or defending but having a way for charging the bar using the Heavy and Special buttons at the same time, has a forward short jump that can be used for start a combo, also obtains a roll pressing Light and Medium buttons and changing the Special Guard for the Evasion that makes the character performing a sidestep (that can be only used in ground unlike the Special Guard), you can't hold the sidestep but you can cancel the sidestep with an attack at the cost of 25% of the Guard Gauge. The Half Moon Style is a combination of both but with some unique obtions and without the same power, gains gauge normaly without reductions nor penalizations and has the Counter Attack, Airdash Cancel and Roll actions, also gains an autocombo mashing Light, Medium or Heavy buttons, the autocombos can be canceled at any moment but has slightly reduced force, with enough gauge the autocombo will finish with an EX move (usually a projectile), the autocombos also works in air. Finally the unique EX style that need to be unlocked (usually after finish the respective character Arcade route with a high score), not only has the best of the three styles (gains more gauge attacking and taking damage without penalization, can charge their gauge, has Dash Attack, Forward Shor Jumps, Airdash Cancels, Rolls, Counters, Recoveries, Sidesteps mantaining Special Guard and autocombo) and also haves more powerful and deadly variations of the respective character's moveset, because all this the EX versions are offline-only. As a sidenote, just like in Actress Again all the styles changes some of the moves of each character adapting them to the respective style mechanics.
