The Warriors- Fresh Blood

The Warriors: Fresh Blood is a future open world beat-em-up/fighting video game based on the 1979 film The Warriors (itself based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Sol Yorrick). Developed by Catch 22 Studios and published by Rockstar Games, it is a reboot of The Warriors intellectual property. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S & Microsoft Windows.

Story Premise[]

45 years after the events of The Warriors, New York City has continued to devolve, with every day being more violent than the last. New, more advanced generations of gangs have replaced the old ones, and all attempts of a citywide truce have gone the way of the dodo. Not even the newest iteration of the Gramercy Riffs can restore peace now.

After the Riffs suddenly die from "mysterious circumstances", you and every other gang in the city see there's now an opening as the most powerful gang in the city. As the leader of the new Warriors, you and your crew must fight for your place in the city, defeating other gangs and police along the way. There's now fresh blood on the streets!

Gameplay[]

The second ever non-racing video game developed by Catch 22 Studios and the first in a new genre for the company, The Warriors: Fresh Blood reboots the intellectual property of The Warriors, giving it a new and authentic fighting experience while still retaining the core of the franchise first introduced by Sol Yorrick in 1965.

Gameplay involves a mixture of action-adventure, survival and beat-em-up mechanics, with inspiration primarily from the 2005 Rockstar Games video game adaptation of the 1979 film The Warriors and the Grand Theft Auto franchise (specifically, 2013's GTA V). The games sees the Warriors attempt to take over all of New York City, while trying to deal with both police and rival gangs in opposing territories in the process. As is the case with most of Rockstar's games, several minor gameplay elements are mixed into the experience, such as the ability to use spray paint to mark turf, or to assault or threaten other people.

While the game's story is orchestrated through a linear series of missions, similar to that of the 2005 game, there are several side quests that can be completed which award cash and XP. Players can access side quests and story missions easily and at their own pace in the game's open world. Characters can use melee attacks, firearms and explosives to fight enemies, and may run, jump, swim or use vehicles to navigate the world. In combat, characters have health bars below their feet that shows their health level, reducing whenever the character takes damage, although it can be replenished by using Flash-Med, a new version of Flash; a fictional painkiller from the 2005 game. Flash-Med can also be used to revive characters' health if they are knocked out, although it must be restocked by visiting a hospital. Characters that die automatically respawn on sight after a five second delay.

Missions involve the Warriors starting from their hub base in Coney Island attempt to take over other portions of the city by taking down that portion's respective gang. Defeating gangs earns the player more cash and XP as well as that gang's territory added on to the player's. At the same time, players must avoid getting caught by the police, which respond as indicated by a "wanted" meter on their HUD, which goes up after every crime that the player and their crew commit. Successfully avoiding cops awards additional cash & XP. Other new mechanics include fighting people in the open world aside from the side quests and story missions, robbing/mugging for essentials and a "three strike" system if the player fails to complete a mission or if they get arrested or killed. These are explored in the various subheadings below.

New York City[]

The main setting for the game, the game features a 1:1 recreation of New York City (albeit in an updated universe similar to that from the book/film), including all five main boroughs and every major neighborhood and many smaller ones within the city. Each borough is home to anywhere from one to four major gangs (those with the most influence) and five to ten minor gangs (those with the least influence).

Boroughs[]

  • The Bronx
  • Brooklyn
  • Manhattan
  • Queens
  • Staten Island

Mechanics[]

The following mechanics have been incorporated into the general gameplay to further enrich and/or expand the overall experience:

  • Breaking and Entering - Every building in New York City can be broken into and entered by one or all of the Warriors. The player can choose to rob any store as a potential money making activity. Occasionally and more often than not, a building can be entered by smashing a window with an instrument or a fist or picking the lock if the windows are barred up. While picking the lock, a quick time event will start up where the player must replicate a combination on the lock that also briefly shows up on the screen. Doing this three times will unlock the door. This must completed within 10 seconds; if the player fails to open the door, an alarm will sound, alerting the police toward the player's location. Once inside the store, the player, along with their allies can collect items they find as cash bonuses.
  • Stealth Spots - Stealth Spots are certain areas where the player and the crew can hide; these spots are distinguished by flickering and dark lighting and an almost black appearance. Once inside a Stealth Spot, the player's health will turn blue instead of red and slowly regenerate over time, and the character(s) will automatically be in a crouched position, to indicate they're in stealth mode. While in stealth mode, the player can manually lock on to a potential mugging victim or a rival gang member while slowly approaching them, attempting to kill/knock them out quickly and silently in the process. Projectile weapons, such as bottles and bricks are aimed automatically and can be thrown to make a noise to the player's advantage, distracting the opponent. Firearms can also be locked on to enemies, although they must do so manually. There is also a chance for Stealth Spots to be taken away; if an NPC briefly sees you in hiding, the spot will immediately disappear. Successful kills or muggings award cash & XP.
  • Marking - During missions and at select points of the map, graffiti (known in-game as marks) can be "painted" in areas. As the name would entail, markings are indications of a gang's presence within a territory. Any markings in an enemy territory taken over by the player will automatically be changed to that of the Warriors, although the player can choose to paint areas with no markings already there. To do so, the player must trace the shape that appears on the screen, by moving the left analogue stick along the path.
  • Mugging - Grabbing a victim will initiate a mugging. Two status bars will be displayed; The players mugging process (top bar) and the victims (bottom bar). The player must then fill the bar up before the victim. If a cop has pinned you, and is about to cuff you, this has the same rules.
  • Wanted System - In a similar fashion to Grand Theft Auto, there is a wanted system that correlates directly to the city's police response to criminal activity. In the player's HUD, their heat level (Signified by a red flame) will go up after every fight involving innocents including fist fights or mugging, as well as breaking an entering. The police will respond to these crimes in accordance to the player's heat level, ranging from typical officers to SWAT teams with high powered weaponry. Players also have a higher chance of getting arrested the further up their heat level rises.
  • Three Strike System - If the player fails to complete a mission or if they get arrested by police or killed by rival gang members, they will receive one strike, which will show up in their HUD under their heat level. If players get three strikes, they will have to start the game over again from scratch.

Weapons[]

There are a total of 88 weapons that the player can use throughout the game. Similar to Grand Theft Auto V, these weapons are separated into eight different categories: Melee, Pistol, Shotgun, Machine Gun, Rifles, Heavy Weaponry, Thrown Objects and Special Weapons.

Melee Pistol Shotgun Machine Gun Rifles Heavy Weaponry Thrown Objects Special Weapons
Baseball Bat AP Tactical Assault SMG Assault Flare Gun Baseball Stationary Sniper

Gangs[]

Collectively, there are ? rival gangs throughout New York City that the Warriors can interact with. The bulk of them have to be taken down in order for the Warriors to control the city, although there are some (albeit very few) that try to help them. In addition to the major gangs, their are some minor ones that the group can interact with as well.

Major Gangs[]

Minor Gangs[]

Subheadings and Links to be added here.

Police[]

In addition to the various gangs, the New York Police Department serves as an additional antagonist to the Warriors group.

Police will respond correspondingly to actions committed by the player and their presence will be indicated on the player's HUD via a special "wanted" meter. This meter will go up with every crime committed including to name a few, looting a business, arson, and murder. Police units will respond with foot manpower at the lowest and all manpower imaginable at the highest end of the meter including SWAT units and helicopters.

If the player or any member within their crew gets arrested or killed by the police, their wanted meter will automatically reset, and the first strike within the "Three Strike" mechanic will be used. When all three strikes are used, the player will be forced to start the game over again from the last time they saved their profile, losing varying amounts of progress in the process. Successfully avoiding cops awards additional cash & XP.

DLC Expansions[]

To date, there are 3 DLC story expansions that are available for purchase. These expansions can only be played at the end of the campaign for the game. If these expansions are purchased, the game’s story will include references to them.

The Mods ($9.99)[]

The first expansion available for purchase, The Mods is a story expansion that takes place in the new universe’s version of London, England, where the mods and rockers brawls of the 1960s never stopped and the city devolved In a way similar to New York. Set before the events of Fresh Blood, the player takes control of a rogue teenager who ends up leading his own counterpart of The Warriors in the long run.

Blood Down Under ($9.99)[]

The second expansion, Blood Down Under takes place in Melbourne, Australia before the events of Fresh Blood. Here, there are no gangs like The Warriors; instead, the city is ruled by three prominent and warring crime families. The player takes control of a Consigliere within one of these families who takes over when the boss dies. He or she must work to uphold the values of his family while fighting the other two families at every waking opportunity.

Inspired by The Carlton Crew, Honoured Society and the Calabrese Family from the 1970s, this is the only expansion that doesn’t involve rogue gangs and the only one with a focus on organized crime.

Atlantax ($9.99)[]

The third and last expansion, Atlantax takes place in Atlantic City, New Jersey and is the only expansion whose events take place concurrently with those of Fresh Blood. In this expansion, Atlantic City is seen as the new New York and is implied to be dealing with a rise in rogue street gangs of their own. The player takes control of the leader of Atlantax, Atlantic City’s counterpart to The Warriors based in a casino. The objective here is similar to Fresh Blood in that the player must elevate their group to be the most respected and feared among the city.

Soundtrack[]

As a whole, the game features a soundtrack curated by LoganC22 and various Fandom users and consisting of 126 songs that the player can listen to. Similar to Grand Theft Auto, the soundtrack is spread out over 7 fictional radio stations, with each of these stations showcasing a specific genre. Some of the stations highlight a specific decade of music.
