Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Definitive Edition is a re-master/remake/soft reboot of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that was released on January 21, 2029 on the 30th anniversary of the original game. It seeks to correct address criticisms with the original version of the game & making the original version even better. However, this also marks the first Smash game where the creator was given much complete & total control over what he can include meaning that this game can & will have anything. Like Melee & Brawl, the game is now rated T for Teen.
Gameplay[]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Definitive Edition plays very similarly to past games in the Super Smash Bros. series as it's a fighting game for up to 16 players in which characters from Nintendo games & other 3rd & 4th-party franchises try to knock each other out of an arena. Unlike other fighting games, which often have a health system, by default, it uses a percentage system. When players are damaged, their percentage goes up, increasing the distance in which they are launched. Getting launched off-screen results in a KO & a point for whoever landed the final blow.
Unlike other fighting games, each character controls virtually the same. Players have access to Normal attacks & Special attacks, which change depending on if they are in the air or the ground & what direction they are holding the control stick. Alongside those, the player can also Jump & utilize platforms scattered around stages, Shield against attacks, Grab enemies & toss them around, utilize a wide variety of Items that spawn on stage or unleash a powerful Final Smash if they have broken a Smash Ball or filled up their Final Smash Meter.
Gameplay Changes[]
- Character Overhauls: Many of the game's veterans have received reworks to their movesets or entire overhauls in order to make those characters feel more modern & mesh well with newer characters.
- Air Dashing: A new ability that many characters can perform, inputting a dash motion in the air allows you to perform a short Air Dash. This is great for maneuvering through the air, dodging attacks or getting closer to an enemy. After an air dash, you can cancel the attack into an aerial. You can only perform 1 Air Dash after leaving the ground. There are 2 types of air dashes:
- Standard Air Dash: Allows you to dash forwards or backwards.
- 8-Way Air Dash: Allows you to dash in all 8 directions.
- Air Shielding & Air Grabbing: Players can now Shield & Grab in the air, allowing for even more options while airborne. Your shield while in the air will take less damage, but attacks will knock you around more than on the ground. Air grabbing is easier to break out of than on the ground, though certain grabs change properties while in the air.
- Grab Reversal: If you're being grabbed & the enemy is about to throw you, tap the opposite direction the enemy is throwing you in to perform a Grab Reversal. It can be hard to pull off as the timing is a bit strict, but pulling it off allows you to cancel your enemy's throw & cause you to grab them.
- Stealing: Grab an enemy while they are holding an item will cause the item they're holding to be put in your hands.
- Unlimited Mode: Akin to BlazBlue: Central Fiction, every fighter, Assist Trophy, enemy & boss has an Unlimited version of themselves that's unlocked under specific conditions, giving everyone damage buffs, slightly increases their movement speed & removing the startlag & endlag of their attacks & with the bosses becoming just like their EX counterparts. They're become unlockable in the other modes & are playable in Final Smash's True Ending.

Fighters[]
There are 75 returning veterans from the original version as well as 109 newcomers, though some were cut several characters to remove clones, while others were replaced by other characters on the roster. The complete roster is 184, not counting Master Soul. Bolded fighters are newcomers. Italicized are only playable in Galeem & Dharkon's Souls boss fight.
Summons[]
Characters summoned when using their namesake item, the Assist Trophy. Most can air dodge, meteor smash or spike opponents & can be defeated, grabbed, thrown, carried, chomped on, taken down, buried & possessed. You can also give them food to keep them from being KO'd, especially if they got hit & protect them as if they were an actual team member. Like in the base version of Ultimate, KOing an Assist Trophy awards the player with a point. The complete total is 119 with 58 returning & 61 newcomers. Bolded are the newcomers. Characters with Boxing Ring titles are playable in Assist Smash.
Assist Trophies[]
Pokémon[]
Many Poké Ball Pokémon were scrapped, reducing the total amount to 21 with 12 returning & 9 newcomers.
Enemies[]
Non-controllable characters that appear primarily in Final Smash & Smash Run, though in the former, they would force players to only use certain attacks to hurt them for the sake of challenge due to some enemies taking more damage from grounded attacks, aerial attacks, throws or specials. They are split between 3 types: Weak, Tough & Dangerous. Defeated enemies can be knocked into others, defeating others or leaving Dangerous enemies more vulnerable. Unlike in Smash 4, Chain-Chomps can be damaged without hitting the stakes they're attached to & Ornes can be killed just like in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Bolded enemies are new ones. Light & Dark Clones are exclusive to Final Smash.
Weak[]
The weakest enemies in the game. They could only be a problem if you're busy fighting Tough & Dangerous, but still shouldn't be underestimated.
Tough[]
The normal enemies are more difficult than the weak enemies, but pose as much of a threat when compared to the dangerous enemies.
Dangerous[]
These enemies are the ones that you should prioritize if they show up as they can armor through weak & tough enemies being knocked into them. However, once defeated, they can knocked into several enemies & stagger those in the same category as them.
Bosses[]
Characters that are much larger, deal tons of damage, are immune to grabs & armor through all attacks. However, they're also generally slow & telegraph their attacks before using them, allowing for you a chance to dodge. They also make you do things like you're fighting another player to make sure you're using all your attacks & can combo their attacks into another one to reinforce combo DI, while still having big hit attacks that enforce survival DI. There are 50 bosses with 16 returning ones & 34 new ones. Bolded are new bosses, but only Metal Face, Dark Emperor, Yellow Devil, Metal Gear REX & Gruntilda are unbolded due to having appeared before as stage bosses or in Metal Gear REX & Gruntilda's case, part of the stage, which they still do.
EX Bosses[]
Only appearing on higher difficulties, EX Bosses are stronger versions of the game's normal bosses, boasting faster & more damaging attacks, alongside increased health.

Items[]
Objects that randomly spawn during matches & can be picked up & used. Many of them can be picked up & can either be used as a weapon or be picked up to provide healing or some kind of status effect. Unlike previous games, several Assist Trophies can also pick up & use them as well. Sora will enter his Valor stance when holding an item. Zero & Travis will just throw the Beam Sword, Misery will temporarily become faster after eating any sweets, Katsuragi still does her Neutral Attack when using Hedlok in conjunction, Ragna can gain even more health when in possession of the Soul Stone & Junko & Lucy will deliver a Slasher Smile when using Death's Scythe for a KO. There are 89 items with 74 returning ones & 15 new ones. Bolded are the new items.
Type[]
Items can be grouped into several categories based on their effects. In addition to the above, certain items can be heavy, which limits those that pick them up into walking slowly and throwing. Only the heavyweight characters can move quickly or jump while carrying a heavy item.
Name | Meaning |
Container | Items that release other items once broken open, which can be done either by attacking them or by picking up and throwing them. In general, container items have a 12.5% (1 in 8) chance of exploding instead of releasing items. |
Battering | Items that are wielded by characters once picked up, turning their neutral attack, forward tilt, dash attack, and forward smash into an item swipe. |
Shooting | Items that fire projectiles when used, typically replacing the neutral attack and neutral aerial of the user. They all have limited ammunition and will merely shoot blanks once it runs out. In SSB4 and Ultimate, trying to shoot an empty item will instead simply throw it. |
Throwing | Items that can only be thrown at opponents. Holding a throwing item means that a character cannot use most of their attacks, as pressing the attack button will simply throw the item. |
Explosive | Items that can cause an explosion when activated, then disappear from the field. Most explosive items are also throwing items, but there are exceptions. |
Transformation | Items that provide fighters unique attacks and temporary effects. |
Gear | Items that temporarily improves a fighter’s natural abilities. |
Recovery | Items that decrease the damage of the user (or increase their HP in Stamina mode). Starting in Melee, recovery items can be picked up even when the character is already holding an item. |
Summoning | Items that release an ally that fights alongside whoever activates the item. |
Combining | Items that first must be assembled before they can be used. |
Special | Items that have special effects. |
Other | Items that do not fit into any of the above categories. |

New to this game, is the ability turn on & off specific stage hazards & transformations, allowing you to truly customize how the stage acts during the fight. There are inputs that can be used at the stage select to skip to certain places in the travelling stages, performed by pressing L & A while inputting a certain direction & pressing the R button during it causes it to stay in 1 specific area.
