Like the first game, Planet Zoo 2 is set in North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the polar regions (Arctic and Antarctica). The sequel also features various biomes and places such as houses, yards, farms, rivers, towns, jungles, forests, lakes, beaches, oceans, coral reefs, islands, taigas, tundras, polar ice, canyons, mountains, deserts, outbacks, watering holes, and savannahs with each providing unique challenges for the player while they are designing their parks.
The maps featured in the game are significantly larger than those in the first game (Planet Zoo).
The game features various modes, including a campaign mode, a "Chaos Theory" mode which revisits key narrative moments, and the returning Challenge Mode, Career Mode, Franchise Mode, and Sandbox Mode.
