Need for Speed Nitro (Abbreviated NFSN) is a future racing video game in the Need for Speed franchise. The third rebooted title within the series and developed by Catch 22 Studios, it is a reboot of the 2009 video game of the same name developed by EA Montreal. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S & Microsoft Windows.
Gameplay[]
The third reboot of a previous title within the Need for Speed franchise following Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) and Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) and developed by Catch 22 Studios, Need for Speed Nitro takes on a gameplay style similar to that of the first Nitro title in the franchise. Described by LoganC22 as a complete overhaul of the original, the reboot features reworked and/or new gameplay mechanics that make it stand out from the original as well as give the intellectual property a new feel and experience.
The game features an arcade-styled approach to gameplay similar to that of the original Nitro, although it has several stark contrasts between it and the original. Unlike the original, the game features a story that sees the player's character compete in various cups scattered across enviroments based on real-world locations in the hopes of achieving money and immortality. Players progress through each portion of the career by beating an individual boss in that cup's respective city, which can be done by accumulating a predetermined total of Style Points, which can be earned during races while drafting, drifting and staying in first place. Players also have heat levels that rise after every event in a cup and police units integrated into events will pursue players at different intervals. In these regards, the reboot can be described as an antithesis to both Need for Speed: ProStreet and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010).
Other major differences include non-disproportionate vehicles and a slight sense of realism in addition to the speed and excitement the original title emphasized. While racing, players have three different types of nitro that they can use: a blue gauge of regular nitro, Burst Nitro (a smaller but more powerful form of nitro represented by a lime green guage) and Rage (an even smaller and even more powerful form of nitro represented by a dark red gauge). The regular nitro charges over time, Burst Nitro charges after every successful drift, and Rage recharges after every successful takedown of a cop or opponent. If the Burst Nitro or Rage is used, the vehicle's regular nitro color will change to either lime green or dark red for that nitro’s duration.
The customization system is similar to that of Criterion Games' Need for Speed Unbound. Players can customize any vehicle they own with vast assortments of visual and performance upgrades. They can also add visual tags similar to those from Unbound, with these tags being used as the game's "Own It" feature, which is the only aspect returning from the original Nitro in its entirety.
Game Modes[]
Collectively, there are a total of 12 playable events in the game. The bulk of these events are playable in both single player and online play, although some can only be played in one capacity or the other. Unless otherwise noted, all events feature up to 8 racers at one time.
Single Player Only[]
- Career - A series of cups spanning across the globe with the overall objective of achieving immortality. Cups in any city consist of 9 events in any combination of the events listed below and the Boss Challenge, for a total of 10 events.
- Boss Challenge - The last event in every cup, this event involves only the player and the boss from that cup's respective city. To be able to challenge a boss, the player must complete every event in the cup and accumulate a predetermined amount of Style Points in the process. Beating bosses allows the player to progress through the career and move from city to city.
- Time Attack - Event featuring only the player where the objective is to achieve the fastest time.
Single Player/Online[]
- Circuit - Lap based racing along a fixed route. Circuit races range anywhere from 1 to 3 laps in length.
- Eliminator - A Circuit-only event with the only difference from a regular Circuit being that the opponent in last place is eliminated from the race after 30 seconds.
- Sprint - A traditional race from point A to point B with the goal of finishing in first place.
- Speed Hunter - Event inspired primarily by the Speed Challenge mode from Need for Speed: ProStreet. The overall goal is to reach point B from Point A in first place, while also trying to achieve the highest cumulative total speed.
- Drag - Event where the player must finish a 1.0 mile or 1.5 mile long drag race in first place. Drag races require the use of manual gear changes and nitrous in order for the player to be successful. This mode, Drift Challenge and Drift Eliminator are the only ones where there is no risk of police.
- Drift Challenge - Event where the objective is to score the highest accumulated total of drift points. The longer the drift, the more drift points and Style Points the player will earn. This mode, Drift Eliminator and Drag are the only ones where there is no risk of police, and it features up to 4 racers at one time.
- Drift Eliminator - A variant of Drift Challenge with the same goal as Drift Challenge, with the only difference being that the player with the least amount of drift points is eliminated after every lap. This mode functions similarly to the regular Eliminator mode.
- Takeover - Event carried over from Need for Speed Unbound. The goal is to earn the most points during the event, which can be done by completing stunts and by reaching checkpoints. Players' "Own It" tags will automatically adorn the surrounding environment after every successful points run. Like in Unbound, this event features 4 racers at one time that perform individual turns around the track. However, unlike Unbound, police will attempt to impede the player during the event.
Online Play Only[]
- Nitro Playlist - A series of races consisting of anywhere from 3 to 6 events. When organizing a Nitro Playlist, the organizer can select nearly any event in any available location, and can set the total number of players from between 4 and 8. The only event that cannot be chosen is Time Attack. Similar to any single player event, police are integrated into every Nitro Playlist.
Locations[]
The games features a total of 15 locations that are featured in events. These environments are based on real world locations. In the career mode, each location is home to 1 cup and 1 boss opponent from that cup's respective city.

Bosses[]
There are 15 bosses that the player will face in-game, 1 for each city in the game. Described as the best of the best, these opponents stand in the way of player's progression through the career and must be beaten in their respective Boss Challenges in order for the player to move on. Each boss has their own custom ride capable of taking on the player.

"Own It"[]
Part of the game's new customization system, the "Own It" feature is an aesthetic game mechanic and the only aspect of the original Nitro that returns in its entirety.
Like in the first title, Own It causes any buildings, surrounding landscape and road markings to be tagged with the lead driver's colors and tag. This is also used to indicate the race leader and players get additional Style Points for being and staying in first place. Players can add their own tag similar to those seen in Need for Speed Unbound to their vehicle.
Tags[]
There are a total of 80 visual tags available to choose from; 36 are new while the other 44 return from Unbound.
Need for Speed Nitro (Catch 22 Studios Reboot)/Tags
Police[]
Police in the new Nitro function similarly to those from the original Nitro, except that a maximum of three police units will chase the player and opponents as opposed to two. Additional units will form roadblocks and/or ram the player in attempts to impede the player's progress. Unlike the first title, police vehicles do drop spike strips although they still cannot engage racers with a police helicopter. Units are integrated into events unless otherwise noted.
Heat System[]
The heat system has been drastically redesigned with inspiration coming from new Need for Speed titles, like Heat and Unbound. At the start of every cup, players' heat levels will start at level 1, and as they progress through the cup's events, their heat level will automatically rise by 1/2 of a level, so that by the time they reach the Boss Challenge (and subsequently, the cup's end), they will reach heat level 5. Similar to Unbound, heat levels are not reduced if the player changes their vehicles' appearance; instead, they will automatically reduce back to level 1 once the player starts a new city's events. As the players' heat level rises, so does the police's aggressiveness.
Vehicles[]
At any heat level, police units will be any one of three vehicles listed for that heat level.
Heat Level | Vehicles |

1 | Ford Crown Victoria
Toyota Crown Platinum (S235) Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 |
2 | Subaru Impreza WRX STI (GRF-D)

NFS Nitro Tag Studio[]
NFS Nitro Tag Studio is a mobile car customization and companion app to Need for Speed Nitro available on iOS and Android for free. The app functions similarly to NFS Heat Studio. Players can customize their own visual tag for any vehicle in the game, and they can integrate their tags into the main game by logging in and syncing their EA account. Every non-DLC car that is available in the main game is included in the app so that the player can test their custom tag on them.
Soundtrack[]
The game features a soundtrack curated by LoganC22 and consisting of 36 songs that the player can listen to. Similar to that of Need for Speed: Carbon, the soundtrack is split into three sections: Hip Hop/Rap/Grime, Rock & Techno. Most of the soundtrack is playable both in game and in the menus. As a whole, the soundtrack has similar themes to the original Nitro, Need for Speed (2015) & Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005).

Trivia[]
- The fifth overall Need for Speed title developed by LoganC22 and his company, Catch 22 Studios.
- It is also the only Need for Speed planned for 2024.
- It is also one of only two planned Ideas overall for LoganC22 for the year.
- It is also the first reboot developed by Catch 22 of a title within an existing video game series.
- According to LoganC22, a Nitro reboot was chosen as the next installment following 2023's Need for Speed Reborn primarily because of nostalgia. Specifically, "the original Nitro was the game that I practically wore out my DS playing growing up".
- While being pursued in any city, police units will speak their respective languages over their loudspeakers, with their translations automatically appearing on the screen.
- Continuing the trend that started in 2022's Need for Speed War, all old muscle cars and some new ones will wheelie at the start of races if they are upgraded enough. However, they will not wheelie when nitro is first activated.
- When the player takes down another opponent or a pursuing cop, the camera will show that car's wreckage in similar fashion to Hot Pursuit (2010) and Burnout 3: Takedown.
- Every time the Rage nitro is activated, a roar sound similar to the "Roar" ability from the Midnight Club series will emit from the vehicles' exhaust.
- All 15 bosses’ vehicles were designed by LoganC22 using only NFS Unbound.
