Mortal Kombat: Khaos is the 13th mainline Mortal Kombat game, and the first following Netflix's purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery.
History[]
After the discontinuation of Mortal Kombat 1 following the second Kombat Pack's release, ending with guest character T-1000, Mortal Kombat as a brand would go under a hiatus. After the release of the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection and the 2nd Mortal Kombat movie, it was announced that Netherrealm Studios, the studio behind the development of the MK series since Mortal Kombat 9, would return to develop the series, with Ed Boon remaining at the helm, and a big shift of developers as a means to refresh the Mortal Kombat brand and IP when it comes to video games. MK Khaos started development in 2024, originally under the name Mortal Kombat 2 (not to be confused with the arcade game, Mortal Kombat II), the shift with the purchase by Netflix would lead to WB Games being faded out for a brand new version of Netherrealm Studios.
MK Khaos would be revealed at the 2026 Game Awards, with a Q4 2027 release date. The game would release for the current generation of consoles in tandem with the Mortal Kombat 3D Kollection a month later.
Story[]
Main Story[]
Following the events of MK1: Khaos Reigns, Fire God Liu Kang would go back in time and would meet up with Raiden from the original timeline. Both of them would discuss the fear of the timelines splitting off and getting too numerous and too much for the Elder God's to handle, so with the help of Geras, Liu Kang and Raiden would combine the timelines as a means of unity (Those timelines being the original MK timeline, the Alternate MK timeline, and the New Era timeline, with the New Era being the one that is most taken from, even though there are some significant differences. Along with that, new Kombatants enter the fray coming from another alternate timeline where Shao Khan won the Battle of Armageddon and caused the apocalypse across all realms. While initially a good idea, the timeline will continue to get split, and thus, Quan Chi is destined to get revenge after the events of MK1. The timeline is also moved back to the events of Deadly Alliance. With Liu Kang being a Fire God and the protector of Earthrealm, the person who ends up dying to the hands of the Deadly Alliance (Shang Tsung and Quan Chi) is Kung Lao.
After the death of Kung Lao from the hands of Shang Tsung, Liu Kang and Raiden decide to form a team to stop said Deadly Alliance. That team consisting of Scorpion (A 2nd Scorpion and the son of the original, who had died from the hands of Sub-Zero in this combined timeline), Johnny Cage, Kenshi Takahashi, Sonya Blade, Kurtis Stryker, Jax Briggs, and Harumi Hasashi/Skorpion (A Harumi from a timeline where the original Scorpion died in the Battle of Armageddon and his wife Harumi took the helm), along with Madam Bo as their trainer. During this search to stop the Deadly Alliance, more and more factions are destined to take the Alliance down, among them being the realm of Edenia, with Sindel leading the charge and issuing in Kitana, Mileena, and Rain to stop them. The Black Dragon, who at the moment only consists of Kano, tries to recruit new members, one of them being Taka, the future son of former Black Dragon members Kabal and Tasia, who had formed the Blue Dragon out of the ashes of Black Dragon's dormancy, these two would feud with the Red Dragon, particularly with the main leader, Mavado. Outworld gets involved as well, with Li Mei and Tanya of the Umgadi after Shang Tsung and Quan Chi as revenge. Sheeva also gets involved to stop Raiden and Liu Kang's army, teaming with fellow Shokan Klash. Nitara teams with Reptile and a succubus by the name of Roxie for the sake of Nitara's intentions to rebuild the Moroi race.
Following the defeat of the Deadly Alliance, Kung Lao would come back to life as a Revenant of the Netherrealm, And through his own ambition, he would revive the Dragon King, Onaga. Following this revival, Kung Lao and Onaga would turn Raiden evil, and it would lead to the remaining members of Raiden's Alliance (during the fight with the Deadly Alliance, Kenshi, Stryker, and Jax would die to the hands of Shang Tsung) forming a new alliance with former foes and new faces, including Kane, an Outworld warrior who has his sights on the Dragon King as a means to finally get back to his home in Earthrealm, and Sareena, a demon from the Netherrealm looking to discover more about Onaga's presence. During their search for the Dragon King, they run into foes such as Sub-Zero and Tundra, who the two Scorpions get into a heated battle with, Jade, who had made it her journey to defeat Onaga for her own selfish gain, Hotaru and Havik, who seek Raiden's amulet to unite the Orderrealm and Chaosrealm together, and Shujinko, a warrior who was trained by Madam Bo who originally arrives as an individual, before eventually teaming with the heroes.
The final battle with Onaga sees Liu Kang killing him, but Kung Lao remains a revenant and Raiden remains evil, but defiant against Onaga. With this, the Elder Gods realize that Kombatants were getting too strong, and thus brought back all the ones who had died to initiate the "Battle of Armageddon", using the powers within the Netherrealm, reviving the once forbidden specter known as Blaze to come back to life and even stronger than ever, with the winner of the Battle of Armageddon being the one to defeat him. All of this is led by Delia, the mother of Taven and Daegon, now mad with power and destined to cause full blown anarchy within the realms. This leads to many new factions forming, as Johnny Cage aligns with the Special Forces, the Black Dragon grows stronger than ever, and many defectors trying to settle the score with Blaze themselves for whatever self-ambitions they search for. The Battle of Armageddon ends with whoever you choose during the end game standing tall against Blaze, but with this change in the timeline, comes another massive problem...
Zenith of Warriors (DLC Expansion)[]
Right after the events of the main story, Kung Lao arrives and seeks to stop Liu Kang, becoming a God along with him, but before this happens, Fujin (particularly a Fujin from another timeline who takes Raiden's place as an Elder God) arrives and stops the two from killing each other. What this leads to is another look at the timelines and Liu Kang realizing that he can't just combine the timelines together as they will always split depending on the many, many alternate decisions are made. And so, Liu Kang and Fujin decide on a way to crown the new Elder God in the form of the "Zenith of Warriors" tournament, consisting of many realms with the winner consulting and gaining the powers of an Elder God. A lot of returning faces are here for the tournament, along with new faces, such as Baraka, Drahmin, Reiko, and the Kombat Kids (this time coming from the future and being brought here with another alternate Raiden as a way to warn the different kombatants about future events.). Cassie teams with her parents from the past, along with Jacqui, Jax, and Kung Jin to seek out why this tournament is even happening, Takeda and his dad Kenshi reunite after Kenshi's unfortunate death, and we see Kung Jin be the next heir to the Shaolin following Kung Lao's death and return as a revenant. Meanwhile, Reiko, knowing that Shao Khan is long dead in this timeline, plans to disrupt the tournament and become the next Khan.

Gameplay[]
MK Khaos is the first 3D Fighter in the series since Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe. The gameplay also takes a more traditional approach in it's gameplay, becoming a mix of the 3D Era MK games and other 3D fighting games in it's wake such as Tekken and SoulCalibur. MK Khaos is a 4 button fighter with light and heavy punches and kicks. New mechanics include the "Interception", an evolution of the breaker system, where a defensive opponent can start going more on the offensive, leading to a unique back and forth mechanic unseen in other fighting games. There is also various means of evading attacks and side stepping.
Fatalities, Brutalities, and Friendships return to the series. A new finisher type called "Roadkill" sees your kombatant arrive in a vehicle of their tailored taste and running over the opponent.
