Kanami Etō (衛藤 可奈美, Etō Kanami?) is the main protagonist of the original anime series Toji no Miko and a second-year student in the middle school division of Minoseki Academy.[1]
Appearance[]
Kanami is a 13-year-old girl with short brown hair and light-brown eyes. She ties a tuft of her hair into a short ponytail. As a student of Minoseki Academy, she is often seen wearing the school's uniform along with black thigh-highs and running shoes.
Personality[]
She is a cheerful and positive girl who has many friends. She is a kenjutsu enthusiast, to the point that her eyes sparkle when someone talks about it. She especially loves sword matches and seeing how opponents devise tactics.[1] On the other hand, her love for swordsmanship and sword fights makes her rather impulsive, often getting ahead of herself when she has the opportunity to have a good battle, facing a strong opponent.
Despite her impulsiveness, when it comes to sword fights, she has a great sense of morality, and is very kind-hearted and understanding even to her enemies.
She is brave, strong-willed and quite mature. She can realize and admit her mistakes. Under this cheerful and energetic personality, she is very smart, observant, and perceptive.
Breathing Styles[]

- Sun Breathing - it is a style of swordsmanship utilized by the Kanami to use "breaths", Kanami, and serves as the basis for other Breathing Styles derived from it as a result of Yoriichi changing the breathing techniques to suit the individuals she taught.
- Dance ( Enbu?, lit. "Waltz") - A single high-powered vertical slash.
- Flash Dance - Kanami utilizes a similar method like the Thunderclap and Flash technique of the Thunder Breathing, allowing them to use an advanced version of Dance by inhaling huge amounts of oxygen, increasing the pumping of blood through the entire body, focusing it on the legs, and releasing it all to assault the target with a slash.
- Clear Blue Sky - Kanami spins their body vertically to create a 360° slash.
- Raging Sun - Kanami unleashes two horizontal slashes to hit or defend from incoming attacks.
- Fake Rainbow - Kanami utilizes this technique to evade incoming attacks with high-speed twists and rotations, thus creating afterimages. The afterimages work most effectively on enemies with good vision as they will probably fail attack the afterimage instead of the actual body of the user.
- Fire Wheel - Kanami leaps behind the opponent and spins in the air while releasing a flaming attack in a circular motion.
- Burning Bones - A powerful defensive technique. Kanami unleashes a circular slash that defends from imminent frontal attacks.
- Sunflower Thrust - A single thrust attack with the point of the blade.
- Solar Heat Haze - Kanami charges towards the target, attacking it with a haze covered slash that seemingly fails to land, but actually does hit the target.
- Setting Sun Transformation - Kanami backflips into the air to deliver a powerful upended flaming sword slash.
- Benificient Radiance - Kanami spirals into the air and delivers a powerful slash that surrounds the enemy.
- Dragon Sun Head Halo Dance - Kanami unleashes a continuous fast and powerful sword attack that takes the form of a flaming sun dragon and is capable of decapitating multiple enemies at once.
- Flame Dance - A two-combo strike which starts with a vertical slash and then a horizontal one right after.
- Thirteenth Form - Kanami continuously performs all twelve forms of the breathing style in repetitive succession to increase the accuracy and agility of his movements while reducing fatigue
- Dance ( Enbu?, lit. "Waltz") - A single high-powered vertical slash.
- Water Breathing - it is one of the five main Breathing Styles directly derived from the Sun Breathing. The Water Breathing mimics the element of water, specifically the flow and flexibility of the liquid and infuses it with the users swordsmanship.
- Water Surface Slash - Kanami generates enough momentum to create a powerful single concentrated slash.
- Water Wheel - Kanami leaps and vertically spins forward in the air while releasing a flowing attack in a circular motion.
- Lateral Water Wheel - An alternate variation of the Second Form: Water Wheel that uses a horizontal spin.
- Flowing Dance - Kanami swings and bends their blade in a winding motion along with their body and dances in a flowing pattern, slicing everything in its path.
- Striking Tide - Kanami makes multiple consecutive slashes while twisting their body and sword in a flowing fashion to deliver multiple blows simultaneously.
- Turbulent - An improved and modified version of the Fourth Form: Striking Tide. Kanami increases the quantity of consecutive strikes and slashes along with improving its accuracy in order to contact a specific target during a chaotic situation.
- Blessed Rain After Drought - Kanami changes the grip on their sword and decapitates the opponent in a single flowing strike that causes little to no pain. It is a “sword strike of kindness” used when the enemy willingly surrenders.
- Whirlpool - Kanami fiercely twists their upper and lower body, creating a whirlpool that cuts anything caught in it. It can be used in a place without footing, and if used underwater can generate a large whirlpool that draws in anything nearby in addition to cutting them up like a large blade.
- Whirlpool: Flow - A combination of Third Form: Flowing Dance and Sixth Form: Whirlpool created by Tanjiro Kamado as an improvisation. It combines the footwork from Flowing Dance and the twisting aspect of Whirlpool, resulting in Tanjiro to hack his surrounding, conjuring a twisting, swirling, vicious flow of slices to redirect projectiles from multiple angles.
- Piercing Rain Drop - Kanami performs a fast and accurate stab, capable of reducing the impact of a moving target. The fastest and only thrusting technique of this breathing style.
- Waterfall Basin - Kanami cuts the target vertically in a flowing motion which is most effective when they are falling downward.
- Splashing Water Flow - Kanami changes their footwork in a way that minimises the landing time and surface needed when landing, allowing the user to move without limits. Ideal when fighting in a place with no solid foothold.
- Dead Calm - Kanami ceases all body movements and enters a state of complete tranquility, deflecting, blocking and cutting any incoming attacks with imperceptible speed with his blade. However, its effectiveness is limited as fast and numerous attacks can break through.
- Moon Breathing - it is a Breathing Style derived from the Sun Breathing used by Kanami was the one who utilized breathing techniques. This combat style is one of the most powerful and deadly ones showcased thus far.
- Dead Moon - Evening Palace - Kanami draws his sword and slashes swiftly in a single motion; like with all Moon Breathing techniques, numerous chaotic crescent blades originate from the slash. This technique is reminiscent of Iaijut
- Pearl Flowers Moongazing - Kanami performs several slashes that defend him from incoming attacks while also creating a barrage of crescent blades.
- Loathsome Moon Chains - Kanami swings his sword rapidly in two gigantic crescent slashes, from which a storm of smaller crescents spread. This technique causes huge destruction in a small area.
- Moon Spirit Calamitous Eddy - Kanami makes multiple curved slashes layered over one another, resembling a rising vortex.
- Perpetual Night Lonely Moon - Inscent - Kanami releases a wild barrage of crescent-shaped slashes in front of him.
- Mirror of Misfortune - Moonlit -Kanami swings his sword in a powerful frontal slash that then creates a multi-directional frontal assault, powerful enough to create several deep gouges in the ground and push back two enemies.
- Moon-Dragon Ringtail - Kanami triples the range of his normal attack radius and creates a singular gigantic slash that slowly decreases in size.
- Waning Moonswaths - Kanami creates a seemingly endless stream of claw-like vertical and horizontal slashes, capable of cutting down his intended target from a long range.
- Drilling Slashes - Moon Through Bamboo Leaves - Kanami creates a triple-layered slash twister, capable of mowing down his targets into three clean pieces.
- Catastrophe - Tenman Crescent Moon - One of the 'Moon Breathing''s most powerful techniques. An advanced and more powerful version of Kanami's Moon Breathing: Fifth Form. He swings his sword and creates a chaotic vortex of powerful omni-directional slashes that destroys whatever is caught up within its attack radius.
- Moonbow - Half Moon - Possibly the 'Moon Breathing''s most powerful technique. Kanami creates a barrage of downward crescent slashes, resulting in a powerful sixfold slash crashing down on his opponents; the attack itself is powerful enough to create several miniature craters where the slashes have landed. As this technique is so wide-ranged, it can easily surround and overwhelm multiple enemies at once.
- Fire Breathing - it is one of the five main Breathing Styles directly derived from Sun Breathing. The Flame Breathing mimics the burning effect of fire and replicates it with the user's swordsmanship.
- Unknowing Fire - Kanami charges towards their opponent at high speed and decapitates them in one slash so powerful that it generates enough friction and heat it burns the flesh of their enemy. This technique had enough force to launch the entire Infinity Train off the tracks a short distance.
- Rising Scorching Sun - Kanami releases an arching slash attack upwards.
- Blazing Universe - Kanami swings her blade downwards in an arc.
- Blooming Flame Undulation - Kanami swings her blade in a circular motion that can defend them from all incoming attacks or decapitate multiple enemies at once.
- Flame Tiger - Kanami unleashes a powerful series of sword slashes that takes the form of a rampaging tiger engulfed in flames that charges towards the enemy at blinding speeds.
- Rengoku - The most powerful Flame Breathing technique. A devastating dashing slash that the swordsman initiates from a high stance, the technique had enough power to carve a deep impression that burnt the ground where it was unleashed.
- Thunder Breathing - it is one of the five main Breathing Styles directly derived from the Sun Breathing.
- Thunderclap and Flash (ノ Ichi no kata: Hekireki Issen?) - The swordsman unsheathes their blade, dashes forward at blinding speeds and decapitates the opponent in a split second, reminiscent of Iaijutsu.
- Six Fold - An extension of the Thunderclap and Flash technique created by Kanami. Kanami performs the Thunderclap and Flash technique six times in quick succession while slightly augmenting the power and speed of his dashes.
- Eight Fold - An extension of the Thunderclap and Flash technique created by Kanami. Kanami performs the Thunderclap and Flash technique eight times in quick succession while slightly augmenting the power and speed of his dashes.
- God Speed - An extension of the Thunderclap and Flash technique created by Kanami and the fastest version of the technique, so fast that it reaches subsonic speeds and even an Upper Rank Demon with extrasensory perception couldn’t react in time to evade or block.
- Kiwami - An extension of the Thunderclap and Flash created by Zenitsu. Zenitsu performs an Iajutsu slash and goes into the stance of the First Form, unleashing the original technique after.
- Rise Spirit - Kanami unleashes five electrified arching slashes all in a single moment.
- Thunder Swarm - Kanami surrounds the enemy with powerful waves of electricity and sword slashes that slice up the enemy in all directions.
- Distant Thunder - Kanami generates powerful lightning strikes in several directions with his blade from a far distance.
- Heat Lightning - Kanami unleashes a powerful ranged electrified sword slash upwards that burns the flesh of his opponent.
- Rumble and Flash - One of the most powerful Thunder Breathing techniques. Kanami releases a series of strong ranged electricity attacks that strike his opponent from multiple directions.
- Honoikazuchi no Kami - Thunder Breathing's most powerful technique and the personal creation of Kanami Etou.
- Thunderclap and Flash (ノ Ichi no kata: Hekireki Issen?) - The swordsman unsheathes their blade, dashes forward at blinding speeds and decapitates the opponent in a split second, reminiscent of Iaijutsu.

- Serpentinite Bipolar - Kanami throws both the flail and axe towards his intended target and manipulates the chain by rotating it thus causing the axe and flail to also rotate in order to drill and grind right though his target.
- Upper Smash - Kanami throws both his axe and spiked flail for a pincer move before smashing down on the chain to cause the flail to then rebound and smash his target from afar.
- Stone Skin - Kanami unleashes a series of slashes with his axe deflecting nearby attacks.
- Volcanic Rock - Rapid Conquest - Kanami manipulates both the flail and axe weapons at both ends of the chain by swinging the chain on both sides in order to strike his opponents using a two pronged wide ranged attack.
- Arcs of Justice - Kanami utilizes a powerful barrage with his flail and axe, doing a great amount of damage. The axe is destined to hit first with the trajectory of the flail following from the opposite side and slamming into the opponent.
- Wind Breathing - it is is one of the five Breathing Styles derived directly from the Sun Breathing itself.
- Dust Whirlwind Cutter - The swordsman dashes forward and slashes in a horizontal cyclone pattern.
- Claw-Purifying Wind - The swordsman lifts the sword upwards towards the right, above their head and unleashes four vertical slashes down on the enemy resembling claws.
- Clean Storm Wind Tree - The user unleashes a whirlwind of slashes around their body that can defend them from incoming attacks and slice up their surroundings.
- Rising Dust Storm - The user releases several slashes above them from below their target.
- Cold Mountain Wind - The user creates several circular arched slashes that increase in size from above their target.
- Black Wind Mountain Mist - The user rotates their body in an uppercut movement, creating a tornado of slashes.
- Gale - Sudden Gusts - The user leaps into the air while swinging their blade which generates gale-force winds to shred their opponent apart.
- Primary Gale Slash - The user leaps into the air and swings their blade which generates circular torrents of wind that slices up the opponent instantly.
- Idaten Typhoon (ノ Ku no Kata: Idaten Taifū?) - The user backflips into the air and while upside-down, unleashes a powerful gust of circular wind that slashes apart anything below.
- Flower Breathing - it is a Breathing Style derived from the Water Breathing.
- Honorable Shadow Plum - The user releases several rotating sword slashes that deflects incoming physical attacks.
- Crimson Hanagoromo - The user unleashes single sword slash that curves and twists gracefully.
- Peonies of Futility - The user unleashes a flurry of nine consecutive attacks that flow and weave in on themselves.
- Whirling Peach - A technique used after or during evasion, the user spins around moving with their body weight to deliver an attack.
- Equinoctial Vermilion Eye - A focusing technique that raises the user's kinetic vision to its maximum, while using this technique the user perceives the world as if it were in slow motion. Usage of the technique, however, is highly dangerous, as the tremendous strain on the eyes could cause blood vessels to rupture and lead to partial or complete blindness.
- Serpent Breathing - it a Breathing Style derived from the Water Breathing.The Serpent Breathing combat and breathing style mimics serpents and snakes, specifically their movements and powerful bites, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and swordsmanship.
- Winding Serpent Slash - The user moves like a slithering snake and releases several slashes in a winding pattern.
- Venom Fangs of the Narrow Head - The user dashes behind their opponent at blinding speed and aims to lop off their head.
- Coil Choke - The user circles around his opponent while using their sword to slice them from all directions.
- Twin-Headed Reptile - The user leaps forward and performs a horizontal slash that slices through the target.
- Love Breathing - it is a personal Breathing Style derived from the Flame Breathing. Unlike other Breathing Styles that are based off of natural elements or phenomena, Love Breathing is based of the emotion of love.
- Shivers of First Love - The user dashes forward with a series of extended whip slashes that winds around and through the target.
- Sound Breathing - it is a Breathing Style derived from the Thunder Breathing. Sound Breathing combat and breathing style mimics sound waves, specifically its disorientating loudness, and replicates it if the user's movements, techniques and swordsmanship.
- Beast Breathing - is a Breathing Style derived from Wind Breathing. Beast Breathing combat style mimics beasts and wild animals, specifically their unpredictable and wild nature, including movements, attacks and senses, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and swordsmanship.
- Mist Breathing - it is a Breathing Style derived from the Wind Breathing. The Mist Breathing combat and breathing style mimics mist and vapor, specifically the obscurity of it, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and swordsmanship.
- Insect Breathing - it is a Breathing Style branched out from the Flower Breathing, which itself is branched out of the Water Breathing. The Insect Breathing combat and breathing style mimics insects and bugs, specifically their lethal stings and movements, and replicates it with user's movements, techniques and abilities.
