History[]
Born within the cold tundras of Mor Dhona to the famed commando Boris Bikov and his wife, a shepherd whose identity is kept secret for protection. Natasha Volkova, having initially taken her mother's surname for protection, had spent the majority of her life as a farmer hunting in the wilderness, being taught how to shoot by her parents to hunt for their meals.
For much of her life, Natasha never knew her father as he was often times away doing Voshkod covert ops, only that his job was what allowed her to live a relatively carefree life, but in the few times he returned home they cherished each other's company, with Boris always telling her that the only regret in his work was never seeing her grow up. When she reached the (Garlean era) minimum conscript age of fourteen she volunteered for the army, despite not having to due to her father's request, and finally learned that her father wasn't just a simple Conscript.
With the revelation Natasha trained harder than any of the Voshkod soldiers, hoping to fight alongside her dad, where her skills in hunting wild game had made her an expert in covert operations and assassinations. And while Boris was hesitant at first like any father would, he eventually became proud of his daughter, and by the end of the GVAW Natasha had become one of the youngest Spetsnaz serving the red army.
Tragically Natasha didn't get the chance to properly celebrate her graduation as in (insert) V.C. the Voshkod space station Lun, which was suddenly lost with its last report finding a strange rock, suddenly reappeared orbiting Miona with her father being the leader of the team to investigate what happened, but Natasha's rank and age meant that she didn't know about the mission at that time, only that her father had to take it and it was urgent.
The day she saw her father entering the rocket and leaving for the space station would also be the last time she saw him. As a week later Lunafreya herself, at the time the general of the Vieran Reserves, would deliver the news that her father, and the team of Shock Troopers under him, had suddenly vanished alongside the station. Though devastated by the news Natasha soldiered on and took up her father's mantle and surname. Becoming the (in)famous Commando Natasha Bikov. And during the times she's off-duty she would use her rank to solve the mystery and, hopefully, find and rescue her father.
Due to her rank, Natasha is able to requisition experimental ammunition, from crystalized desolator defoliant for her rifle that shatters upon impact, melting any unfortunate infantry stuck and melting the electronics and visors of vehicles, and defoliant grenades and bombs for her Migs, vacuum warheads that cause the target struck to slowly break itself apart as residual vacuum rips it from inside, and a cyclotronic receiver that basically turns her PKM into a fireball spewing machinegun that shatters bones and concrete easily. But with how expensive it is to make these ammunitions Natasha is hesitant to use them unless the battle is considered dire enough.
Short story[]
General Aya Breane watched the CCTV screens in the situation room, silently observing as an RPG-29 grenade smashed into the Andoran Gepard anti-air tank that defended the large square in front of the Canaan Gate, a mere stone's throw away from the Aquilan Embassy. The civilian staff had been evacuated after the Voshkod had crossed the Gomer river and proceeded to converge on Midgar. Now, Breane and a sizeable group of FIA and military operators had been ordered to stay behind, get 'rolled over' by the Voshkod front, and discreetly establish contact with the various Eorzean resistance groups that were expected to form in the aftermath. From the outside, the Aquilan Embassy resembled a stronghold, its windows covered up by armored blinds and protected by sentry guns that were primed to obliterate any hostile intruder foolish enough to set foot on this fortified strip of Aquilan soil. Even Premier Lunafreya herself had issued strict orders that the Aquilan and Luresian representations in Midgar were not to be harmed in a wishful effort to keep what would later be known as the Andoran Crisis contained in Eorzea.
Meanwhile, the woman who had fired the RPG let out a roar of triumph, for it was none other than the infamous commando Natasha Bikov, who is a rather well-known propaganda icon for her bravery in battle and being the daughter of the GVAW war hero Boris Bikov. Whilst the Voshkod tank formations were still making their slow advance through streets littered with Midgar tank hunters, the Unions forward infantry forces had already established a stable perimeter around Mitte, the central government district of the Midgar capital, where the opposition was almost fanatical. Despite the nigh-constant onslaught across the entire front, the outmanned and outgunned defenders were holding onto this decisive part of the city for sixty hours at this point. "Forward, comrades! This is our chance to break through!" Natasha yelled, once again rallying her fellow soldiers as they mounted over the field of fallen men and women who had previously been cut down in droves by the Flakpanzer. Natasha recognized an exploitable breach when she saw one and pressed on, for the Reichstag, the iconic seat of the Midgar government, was little more than 200 meters away.
Ever since its completion in 1894 V.C., the massive sandstone structure was a silent witness to the turbulent history of Midgar. More recently in 2007 V.C., the Shinra Tower had once again been the site of political upheaval when thousands of citizens gathered around it in the wake of the 2004 V.C. conflict that occured in Aquila, Eorzea and Hawke, demanding the highly unpopular 'Hawekoalition' to step down. Natasha, who was still serving her time as an ordinary conscript back then, remembered watching this pivotal moment on television; and now, she too would become a part of the Shinra Tower's history.
The Andoran defenders did not let up, unleashing a hail of machine gun fire from the windows. After almost an hour of skirmishes outside the building, a detachment of Kodiak tanks managed to link up with the infantry elements. "This is it, comrades! Inside!", Natasha exclaimed while she ditched the unwieldy RPG launcher in favor of a PK general-purpose machine gun that she 'borrowed' from one of the tanks. Meanwhile, the defenders had retreated into the sheltered heart of the structure. Curiously for the Voshkod, many of them were wearing their stone-grey dress uniforms as they provided better concealment in the urban environment and created the fearsome illusion that they were some sort of elite guard unit, prompting Natasha and her comrades to advance with utmost caution. The Midgardian made their final stand in the great parliament chamber, exchanging fire with the Voshkod as they swarmed in from all directions. The sound of gunfire, explosions, and defiant battle cries, 'Za Rodinu' on the one side and 'To Andora's Flame!' on the other, sounded through the entire building.
Natasha tried to flank her way past the defenders and was suddenly ambushed by a single Andora soldier who jumped at her with a combat knife, dragging her to the ground. Both of them wrestled their way across the room while their comrades tore each other apart all around them. The furious Midgardian snarled angry, incomprehensible phrases at Natasha as he tried to thrust the menacing black blade into the face of his eastern adversary. Natasha could barely breathe under the weight of the tall soldier but managed to deliver a shattering headbutt to the nose of her foe, knocking him back. She promptly pulled out her trusty cyclotronic pistol, which was built around a Tokarev TT-33 that her father had used and gifted to her, and repeatedly pulled the trigger until the slide snapped back and locked in place; a close call. Suddenly, Natasha noticed that the fighting around her had calmed down and that her comrades must have either died or moved on. She carefully inspected the rooms, finding countless bodies in grey and Flora-patterned uniforms. The parliament was shot up beyond recognition, with its blue seats torn to pieces by the fighting and a large, gaping impact hole in the steel statue of the Midgar federal eagle that loomed above the morbid scenery. After a while, Natasha walked up a staircase that took her up to the rooftop terrace where she witnessed a scene that she would never forget...
Upon the rooftop, the flag of the Union proudly flew.
Taking off her hat, she looked at the Vieran Reserve badge proudly placed upon it, "Father, I wish you were here to see this moment."
While she was sad her father couldn't be here, knowing he would be over the moons seeing how his "little cub" grew, she know he is out there somewhere, despite everyone else saying that he's dead. And she will find him.
