Overview

A huge weapons platform – the largest mech, wielding the biggest gun.

The Barbarossa is Harrison Armory’s most massive frame to date, built, per the orders of Harrison II, to “stand as the unstoppable image of Harrison I” and to carry the heaviest of weapons and equipment the Armory offers. Standing nearly thirteen meters tall, it is an unsubtle beast of a mech, inspiring terror in enemies and awe in allies. The Barbarossa can mount weapons suitable for engaging toe-to-toe with gunboats and low-gross tonnage subline vessels; due to its size and slow maneuverability, it is often employed in low-gravity engagements where mass is less of a concern.

The Barbarossa is also the platform for the Armory’s LGC-04 “Apocalypse Rail”, created from the Armory’s dayside research and development campus, the Apocalyse is the smallest MAC cannon ever made equipped with an exponential gravitic catapult – a to-scale test product pushed to licensed pilots for field trials as part of the Armory’s ongoing Plenary Beach Magnitude Weapons Test Project.

Distinct from current logarithmic short- or long-spool ship-to-ship weapons (kinetic or energetic/particular), this new platform taps into the Armory’s current gravitic research to exponentially charge and distribute a kinetic payload downrange. This increase in potential energy loading and decrease in total charge time comes at the cost of stability: where the logarithmic spool cannon is stable and shock-resistant, the exponential gravitic catapult is prone to destabilization. For the time being, built-in failsafes will trigger in the event of sudden traumatic destabilization to prevent detonation of the system, resetting any charging process underway at the time of the shock.

The LGC-04 “Apocalypse Rail” system is scaled considerably down from its intended operational role – that is, replacing capital ship spinal spool cannons – in order to effect the accumulation of live data for use in improving the system prior to naval adoption.

The Barbarossa is a popular target for Purview essayists, who have been known to remark on the drawbacks that come with its size and how, as a result, it is a perfect stand-in for their political enemies.

Short story

Megumi “Possum” Mendez smiled as she heard mighty roar of her second beloved cannon as it briefly shook her Barbarossa “Clover Fields”, briefly drowning out the whirring of her fully charged (and beloved) Apocalypse Rail. Seconds later she saw the explosion in the distance and the rapid disappearance of enemy blips nearing the bunker she’s defending on her radar. Followed by autoloading drone behind her printing and passing her a new round.

Then, briefly, she saw arcing plasma bolts coming towards the bunker, and her comms briefly buzzed with shocks and curses. Before her captain, “Darkness” voice cut through the din, as her computer began sending her location data originating from Darkness Napoleon.

“Possum! I need a barrage at this target area.” And as Mendez received her order she heard her computer announcing that her siege cannon has been reloaded, and she cackled in glee as she changed her targeting. And in another roaring fire she saw the area she fired at exploded and sent shrapnel flying, she would hear her mech hissing out steams as the vents open Asher system began warning that her Barb followed by hearing cheer of soldiers in the bunker over her comms. Only for her sensors to blare an alert while her camera saw a small object flying towards the bunker, before an explosion of concrete as it breached the bunker.

ALERT: VILTRUMITE DETECTED

“Shit! Captain status report!”

Static began flooring her headset as she watched as more red blips began swarming into the bunker and she began aiming her Apocalypse at the bunker. Yet she can’t pull the trigger, not until-

“Possum, everyone has evacuated the area!” Mendez then heard the creak of straining joints, steal crashing into concrete, and her captain grunting, “now FIRE ON MY LOCATION, BEFORE HE BREAK FREE!”

With confirmation that her other teammate and the squads in the bunker are safe Mendez began focusing her targeting on the now destroyed bunker. And despite her fear she could help but began to smile, as she hears the hum of Clover’s fully charged Apocalypse Rail as it prime itself. And as she pressed the trigger she shouted her favourite word.

“EXPLOSION!”

And with a ground shaking blast and a deafening roar she fired her Apocalypse Rail, the 120mm osmium dart glowing red and surrounded by plasma from her overheating mech. And as her shell made impact a massive fireball erupted, tearing apart the surrounding area as a massive mushroom cloud billows with shrapnels of wood and dust particles.

Letting out a massive sigh as she began hearing the mechanism of her Apocalypse Rail dying down, and after a few seconds of calm she activated her comms.

“Hey cap, how are you doing?”

With groan, followed by some coughing, her captain responded.

“Other than that cannon of your scratching my paint job, I’m doing fine, even more so than the guy I was holding down. I’m climbing out to regroup, update me if you see more enemies incoming.”

And with the notification of her systems finally rebooted, and the flicking of her Trueblack Aegis as it shuts down, Darkness began climbing out of the gigantic, smoking, and partially molten crater filled with burning detritus that used to be a bunker, flatland, and surrounding forest, walking past the bits of charred skeleton that used to be the Viltrumite she grappled (who she made sure was hit dead on by the rail) and the bits, pieces, and body parts of the Grunts and Elites who didn’t have time to get out of the blast zone scattered around her.
