Criminal Activities refers to the many illegal activities available to the criminally-minded Traveler in Fallout: The Traveler. Trespassing, lockpicking, hacking, robbing caravans, stealing a owned vehicle or rideable creature, taunting at someone, and murder are all considered illegal activities and are frowned upon by society and loss of karma. Avoid being seen if you want to engage in those activities without consequences unless working for a faction that does activities. If you are caught doing an illegal action by a witness you will incur a karma loss, gain or lose affinity with Companions depending on (i.e Barbara hates that if you steal a item and Strong likes that if you murder a NPC) and they will report your crime to local guards who will attempt to arrest you. When confronted by a guard you will have several different options to resolve the matter, some of which are unlocked through joining certain factions, earning a high reputation with a faction, unlocking certain perks or simply having a sufficient skill. Resisting an arrest will always turn the guards and NPCs with high responsibility in the area hostile towards you.

Overview[]

Red text for an action indicates that performing it is considered to be a crime. For example, an item's name that appears in red text means that the item is owned and picking it up is stealing. If you or a follower who is commanded to perform an illegal action are witnessed committing a crime you will lose Karma. Successfully sneaking while committing a crime will prevent you from being detected at cost of Karma as well.

Regardless of whether a crime is witnessed, the Crime sub-tab on the Statistics tab on the Paimon-Pip keeps track of all your criminal activities. Each illegal activity will incur a specific penalty in Karma. Animals can also be witnesses to crimes, so you must kill them in order to exonerate yourself.

Crime Description Karma Loss
Stealing Taking an owned item is considered a crime, but reading an owned Holotape or note is not. Placing a stolen item into a container or grabbing a owned item (not picking up) can also be treated as stealing. A stolen item will be permanently marked in the Paimon-Pip inventory with red text. Viewing items in an owned container, taking your own items out of an owned container, and taking items from a dead NPC are not considered stealing. -1
Lockpicking Being caught attempting to pick the lock of an owned door or container results in a karma loss, even if nothing was taken. Whether or not the lockpicking attempt was successful is irrelevant. -5
Hacking Being caught attempting to hack a password-protected Terminal or a robot results in a karma loss. -5
Taunting -5
Trespassing When trespassing you will receive one warning and be told to leave the area. If you linger and continue to trespass, you will lose karma or gain reputation infamy after 30 seconds. At this point, NPCs will call for the local security or attack you. Certain areas belong to a major or minor faction in the game will immediately incur a reputation infamy and karma loss if you are caught trespassing unless if the Traveler has a high positive reputation with a Major Faction. -5
Pickpocketing Activating an NPC while sneaking will allow you to view their inventory, and take any unequipped items. The chance of being detected is determined by the total weight of the items stolen and your Pickpocket skill. All NPCs will turn hostile if they catch you pickpocketing them. -10
Robbing a Caravan -20
Vandalism -20
Assault Initiating combat or using a hostile Vision ability on an NPC will incur a karma loss or reputation infamy. Attacks by companions also count as assault. Witnesses to assault will cry out to alert other NPCs, and call for local security. A brawl is not considered assault unless weapons or offensive Visions are used, since your attacks are justified by asking your opponent to spar. Also be careful not to use certain apparel during a brawl.

Self-defense against an unprovoked assault is legal and not considered a crime. In fact, nearby local security will even rush to your defense in such situations. For example, Permament hostile faction targets can be legally killed if they are first provoked to attack through dialogue. Striking an allied NPC, or their owned vehicle or mount, will result in multiple verbal warnings. Hitting them more than three times will result in them becoming hostile. If your assault kills the NPC in one hit you will only be charged with murder. Eating a corpse with the Cannibal perk considered forms of assault.

Stealing vehicles or mounts (Grand theft auto) Riding a mount or driving a vehicle owned by another person is considered a crime. As mentioned above, animals can be witnesses to crimes. -30
Murder Killing a non-hostile NPC or domestic animal is considered one of the most serious of crimes. Local security will attempt to arrest or attack you on sight, depending on the location and faction affiliation. Causing environmental deaths, such as drowning or falling to death, will not count as murder. -100
