Emojicats World Online is an online and mobile casual/simulation/role-playing/MMO game based on the Emojicats franchise and characters by Eliot Bowman and other TikTok users. First founded by Smoothie Games developers Jaydon Steinberg and Shervin Timmer, it was released on November 12, 2022 in public beta, January 30, 2023 for global release and May 20, 2023 for Android and iOS. It is similar to Toontown Online, Tomodachi Life, and Club Penguin.

Official Description

Emojicats World Online is an online casual RPG with a twist. In this game, you create your own emojicat, which is just a cat emoji hybrid, and customize it however you wish. The game has in-depth customization options for both your Emojicat and virtual home. You can explore a huge world in the game; you will be in a position to interact with other players and find new places that are good for increasing your circle of friends and experiences for your Emojicat, too. Emojicats World Online is a friendly online community created to suit players of all ages.

History

2022 - Development and public beta testing

In summer of 2022, Jaydon Steinberg and Shervin Timmer, wanted to develop an online MMO featuring emojicats as the main customizable characters. Those creatures were fully made of emojis, and has unique personalities. Development started days later when it comes to concept art and playtesting. It was not long enough that months later, it was opened as a public beta in November of the same year. Some features were missing than the current version, but it quite gained popularity since its launch. Within this period, players can only sign up using their player name and password, and can continue with the very limited use of the character editor.

Some promotional content, including trailers that were posted on Smoothie Games' YouTube, Facebook and NewTube pages, and banner ads were made to promote the upcoming game which was set to release on Q1 2023.

2023 - Full release

Emojicats World Online was launched in January 2023, after public beta testing was closed with a total record of 5,000 players. Various servers have opened, languages were added for bilingual support, and the character editor was expanded, along with customizing emojicat homes. The map has been expanded to a whole since it was called "Emojitown", and the game's official currency, Emojicoins, were introduced, as it will be used for collecting and spending. The game then rose in popularity with over 7,300 players since first day of release.

In addition, minigames were included as accessible through the new Arcade location, which were added in 1.0.8.

Mobile version

On May 20th, the mobile version of the game was launched, and is much optimized for players who want to check out the game on their phones and tablets. There are features changed from this version, including the removal of logging in via the My Emojicats app, and different control methods that can be used with the touchscreen.

Emojicat design changes

On July 31st, Emojicats Limited announced that all characters are now being in a new large design overhaul, with new things such as the addition of eyeglasses, bowties, more accessories, improved humanized bodies, inner and outer ears; and including improvements such as eyes now being black circles in white ones. The game has also updated to the newest version as well following this design change, and also appears in new social media contents. Some players may have to use the "Classic" design, which is the previous one in the in-game character editor.

Gameplay

The game itself is like any other MMO that players used to visit back in the early 2010's, but is much simplified, and requires internet connection to play. When first signing up for an account, players must create their emojicat character with a wide range of customization options available.

Navigation for your character can be used with the arrow keys, but instead uses a joystick or D-pad on the mobile version.

The whole game is set in a fictional town named Emojitown, with various locations, including customizable houses for each player. Sometimes, you'll get to do other activities, such as playing minigames, walking around to earn Emojicoins, driving vehicles, etc., or tasks that can be accessed with a menu. Since this is an online multiplayer game, there are many servers based on various regions of the world, including North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Philippines.

Players can also use the chat feature to make their emojicat character speak, which also supports other languages and emojis. A quick chat option containing many phrases is also available for some players, mostly on mobile, who can't use the keyboard.

The options menu also allows you to change in-game settings, like adjusting volume for background music and sound effects, changing the emoji style, ranging from iOS to Microsoft's 3D Fluent, changing the game's language, and other graphical options such as how many players were shown on the screen as a slider or a toggle for other visual effects.

My Emojicats app integration

The game also lets players to log in or connect to their emojicat using the My Emojicats mobile app. When connecting your character, their emojicat's appearance will be the exact same in-game, and also adds it to the collection. You can also earn an achievement based on this feature for doing so.

Monetization

The entire game is ad-free, but sometimes provides in-game purchases in a certain menu when clicked on the plus sign on the right of the Emojicoin counter. Purchases were held through checkout via Stripe (online) and either the App Store, Google Play or TheoryShop (mobile).

Google Play Pass support

The Android version of Emojicats World Online also supports Google Play Pass, which is a subscription that unlocks paid apps for free, and also makes any in-app purchase free. With this subscription, the game now lets you purchase Emojicoins for free since you'll have more ways to play.

Promotion

The game got attention 7 months after the game's release, as promotional videos and images were officially released to the public, including social media. It was known as one of the top newest online games for 2023.

Reception

The game recieved positive reviews, and is also rated 8/10 according to IGN, for its gameplay style, graphics and sounds.

  • The audio in-game are sometimes stored in a small variety of file formats; for example, some sound effects or exterior ambience are MP3 files, while background music are OGG files.
  • If you can't afford an item to buy using Emojicoins in the in-game shops, you'll recieve a message saying, "You don't have enough Emojicoins to purchase this item..."
