Dark Deception: Unchecked Limitations is an remake/expansion pack to the original Dark Deception universe that is essentially an expert mode for all previous levels by adding new enemies and buffing old ones in all previous nightmares. This game is developed by XXxMegalodonPrimexXx under the collaboration of Dr. H.W. Richardson and published by Glowstick Entertainment. Chock full of memes and weird ideas, it's all morphed together into a journey of increasing absurdity.

Plot[]

The storyline closely mirrors the original Dark Deception, albeitwith a few changes here and there.

You play as Doug Houser, a criminal defense attorney who has apparently faced an untimely demise. Rather than moving on to the afterlife, Doug finds himself trapped in a ballroom alongside a mysterious woman named Bierce, who presents him with a chance to regain his life in exchange for completing a series of tasks. These tasks involve navigating through portals to gather a number of Soul Shards - remnants of human souls, so that he could finally return to the real world. While this may seem straightforward, the challenges are far from simple, as these portals lead to nightmarish realms inhabited by bizarre monsters and their master, Malak, who aren't afraid of ripping Doug apart and paint the corridors with his blood. Bierce provides occasional assistance, but for the most part, Doug must rely on his own ingenuity to survive. In addition, doubts arise about Bierce's true intentions, raising the question of whether she is entirely trustworthy.

Gameplay Additions[]

Unlike in the original Dark Deception, instead of being instantly killed and losing one of their lives, the game features a traditional heart container-based health system. There are different types of hearts in the game, each with its own unique set of pickups. Each heart symbolizes two hit points. The player will lose their health when they suffer damage, which can be a percentage of their hearts. However, damage less than one is not visible on the health bar. The amount of damage that you take depends on the enemy, traps, environmental hazard, and specific attacks, although in Chapters 1-3, most sources deal half a heart of damage unless otherwise mentioned.

From Chapter 4 onwards (including the Hidden Nightmares), all half-heart hits deal a full heart of damage.

There are three types of health:

  • Red Hearts represents the player's maximum health. Your Red Hearts' starting supply is based on difficulty, and further upgrades give you a total of one additional heart forever. Each Red Heart has its own Heart Container, which can be replenished at a Ring Altar or by collecting additional Heart Crystals. As damage is taken, the containers will become empty if the player only has Red Hearts (but the containers themselves remain). The surplus health will be wasted if the player uses a heart that would restore him to more health than his current maximum (for instance, using a red heart when he only needs half of a red heart's worth of health).
  • Blue Hearts essentially act as armor for the player, absorbing harm and preventing him from losing any Red Hearts. After obtaining a Blue Heart, most damage eliminates Blue Hearts until their supply is depleted. Each Blue Heart adds a full Heart and can withstand damage equal to a full Heart before being lost. Blue Hearts can be raised above the maximum visible level of Red Hearts and are still tallied even if they are not visible. The player's last half Blue Heart absorbs any amount of damage while breaking, so taking a full Heart of damage with one half Blue Heart has no effect on the player's Red Hearts.
  • Black Hearts behave similarly to Blue Hearts in that they disappear whenever a Black Heart container is consumed and cannot be normally restored by standard healing. However, they have a unique mechanic in which when one of these hearts are drained, it will temporarily stun all monsters in the level, similar to the player's Primal Fear blast and Stun Orbs. Their health bar priority is the same as Soul Hearts. For example, if you choose a Black Heart before a Blue Heart, the Blue Heart will appear after the Black Heart on the health meter, implying that it would deplete before the Black Heart, and vice versa. Picking up a Blue Heart when you have half of a Black Heart replenish the heart completely and gives you half of a Soul Heart instead.

Sprinting or using a weapon drains the player's stamina. The stamina will deplete completely after 4 seconds of uninterrupted sprint and will fill up just as quickly. From Mascot Mayhem onwards, the player will be granted unlimited stamina removes the sprint function entirely but allows the player to run considerably fast without the use of a Speed Boost, and is considered to be a "gift" by Bierce. In addition, there is also an option to play the game from a third-person perspective, if you want to.

Starting from Elementary Evil onwards, collecting a ring piece triggers a frantic rush back to the level's starting point. A timer, its duration varying by level, initiates a countdown, signifying the player's urgent need to escape swiftly. Additionally, barriers will change states, with certain hallways obstructed by purple barriers in some levels, and new enemies will spawn throughout the level. The activation of the escape sequence allows players to collect hourglass pickups. While in the midst of the escape sequence, the player's point total steadily diminishes at a rate of 5 points per second, encouraging them to reach the exit promptly in pursuit of a higher rank. Time machines, if unlocked, can be entered during the escape sequence to initiate a loop, teleporting the player back to the location of the ring altar without resetting the timer or requiring the replay of a boss fight. Should the timer reach zero, Malak swiftly seizes the player's soul, resulting in instant death. Each time the timer reaches a new quadrant of the bar, a bell chimes, indicating the impending collapse drawing nearer. It's also worth noting that the timer does not count down during boss fights, but it continues to do so during cutscenes, causing a minor loss of time.

Additionally, the tablet has a new mechanic implemented to it, which is the Tablet Battery. The Tablet Battery shows the remaining power supply and the amount of power that is currently being consumed by displaying the rate at which power runs out. It begins with 200% power (see the difficulty modifiers). It will gradually deplete as the player uses their abilities or has the tablet turned on. The remaining battery capacity decreases at a rate determined by how much power is used at any given time. For example, having both powers on and the tablet up will cause the power to drain at an alarming rate. Use your abilities sparingly and only in specific situations to conserve power. A usage graphic with two green bars, a yellow bar, and a red bar appears beneath the percentage indicator. When only one or two green bars are illuminated, the power consumption is minimal. The yellow bar indicates medium power usage, while the red bar indicates critical or maximum power usage.

The player can recharge their tablet by collecting batteries that are scattered throughout most of the levels or by charging them up at specific locations, as well as by picking up most power-ups such as reveal shards and stun orbs. The battery percentage and consumption speed will also be affected by which difficulty mode the player is currently at:

  • In Casual Mode, the tablet has an unlimited power source and therefore will never run out.
  • In Normal Mode, the tablet starts with 200% power and will decrease at normal consumption speed.
  • In Hard Mode, the tablet starts with 100% power and will decrease at 20% slightly faster consumption speed.
  • In Infernal Mode, the tablet starts with 90% power and will decrease at 40% moderately faster consumption speed.
  • In Lunatic Mode, the tablet starts with 75% power and will decrease at 60% significantly faster consumption speed.
