Cyberforce Alliance is a 2024 action role-playing video game developed by Mad Man Ninja Studios and published by Activision for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Samsung Zeo and Microsoft Windows. It is the second installment in the Image Comics gaming series following Image Comics All Stars, and the first Image game published with Activision (due to licensing renewed in 2014 and 2016).

The story, set in the Top Cow Universe, follows a team of superheroes coming together to retrieve the big data clusters related to their origin before the great megacorporation CYBERdata can, facing opposition from several other villainous forces along the way.

Upon release, the game received good reviews from critics, who generally found the gameplay and storyline fun. As of December 2024, Cyberforce Alliance has sold over 2.1 million copies worldwide.

Plot[]

The game opens with the Cyberforce team scattered across the city of Angeles-Kyoto, a sprawling cyberpunk metropolis where technology and chaos coexist. The city's peace is shattered when CYBERdata, a powerful megacorporation, launches a series of coordinated attacks to seize control of vital data clusters. These clusters contain critical information about the origins of Cyberforce and the potential to reshape the future of cybernetics. The team, led by Heatwave, must regroup and prevent CYBERdata from exploiting this technology for their sinister purposes.

As the Cyberforce members come together, they learn that Baron Mako, a high-ranking CYBERdata executive, is orchestrating the plan. He aims to harness the data to enhance CYBERdata’s power and control over the city. However, the path is not straightforward; various factions within the city, including the rogue hacker group Nemesis Collective and former allies-turned-enemies, complicate their mission.

The Cyberforce team navigates through the neon-lit streets and shadowy alleyways of Angeles-Kyoto, facing numerous challenges along the way. They encounter Stryker's Shadow, a cybernetically enhanced adversary seeking revenge against Morgan Stryker, and Lady Scorn, a former CYBERdata scientist bent on vengeance against her old employer. As they battle these foes, the team uncovers a deeper conspiracy that reveals CYBERdata’s ultimate goal: to create a new order where they wield absolute power over technology and society.

In a series of high-stakes missions, the team must infiltrate CYBERdata’s heavily fortified facilities, sabotage their operations, and recover the data clusters before they can be weaponized. Along the way, they must forge alliances with unlikely allies and confront their pasts to strengthen their resolve against the forces threatening their world.

As the Cyberforce team draws closer to stopping CYBERdata, they face a final showdown with Baron Mako and his enforcer, Grimsteel, at the heart of the megacorporation's headquarters. In an epic battle, the team combines their strengths to defeat their adversaries and prevent the activation of a doomsday device powered by the stolen data clusters.

With CYBERdata’s plans thwarted and peace temporarily restored, the Cyberforce team reflects on their journey and the bonds they've strengthened along the way. They realize that while the immediate threat has been neutralized, the fight for justice and freedom in a world dominated by technology is far from over. The game concludes with a hint of future adventures, as the team sets their sights on new challenges and a brighter future for the city of Angeles-Kyoto.

Many aspects of the game are exposed using the cyberpunk term, in a world featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order, tending to focus on a "combination of lowlife and high tech".

The setting is a post-industrial dystopias with extraordinary cultural ferment and the use of technology in ways never anticipated by its original inventors ("the street finds its own uses for things"). Much of the game atmosphere echoes film noir, and often uses techniques from detective fiction.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is reminiscent of a top-down dungeon crawler with an emphasis on cooperative play. Up to three players can play the game cooperatively locally either on the same screen or online with friends or random player lobbies. Players choose three characters to traverse linear stages, fight enemies, and defeat bosses, after being able to explore the world - the city of Angeles-Kyoto. Certain passive buffs are acquired with particular character combinations. Each character's controls are fundamentally identical; each has a jump, light attack, heavy attack, dodge, block, and four special abilities. Special abilities can be synced with the other three members for a synergy boost, with an especially powerful attack unleashed if all four party members sync up simultaneously.

Character progression is handled in a similar manner to traditional role-playing games, with party members leveling up by defeating enemies and bosses. In addition to stat increases, passive buffs can be attached to characters by equipping cybernetic upgrades, obtained during exploration. A sprawling skill tree is also present, which allows characters to gain permanent stat increases by acquiring and spending in-game currency.
