Bloody Roar: Untamed is a 3D fighting game developed by 8ing and published by ACS. It is a reboot of the Bloody Roar series of fighting games, which were originally published by Hudson Soft. Released in 2020 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. A port for the Samsung Zeo was originally planned, but was never released.
ACS first announced development on the game during EVO 2018, almost immediately after buying out the rights for the series IP from Konami earlier that year, following various negotiations in the past.
Bloody Roar: Untamed is a complete reboot of the series, amalgamating characters and plot points from various titles throughout the series and integrating them into a brand new timeline, alongside introducing several new characters.
Gameplay[]
Bloody Roar: Untamed's fighting engine is roughly based on that of Bloody Roar 2 and 3, with various elements borrowed from other titles in the series. The fighting engine has been updated with various quality-of-life improvements in order to be more in line with modern day fighting game standards.
Bloody Roar: Untamed uses a 4-button system consisting of Punch, Kick, Beast and Guard. Punch, Kick and Guard, as their names indicate, allow the player to perform punches, kicks and block the opponent’s attacks, respectively. Meanwhile, the Beast button allows the player to transform into their character’s beast form. While transformed, the Beast button also acts as a third attack button for clawing and biting attacks. Players can also sidestep by tapping up or down twice on the d-pad.
Aside from the standard health gauge, which decreases as the player sustains attacks, each player has a Beast gauge that increases as the player successfully lands attacks, and is what allows players to morph into their Beast form. While transformed, the Beast gauge acts as a second life bar, with the gauge decreasing each time the player gets hit. When the player is knocked down while the Beast gauge is empty, the player is then reverted back to their human form, and the Beast gauge is temporarily disabled, locking their Beast form away.
While transformed, players can perform a Beast Drive, a powerful cinematic attack that shaves off a huge chunk of the opponent’s health bar, at the price of sacrificing the player’s Beast gauge and transformation, with each character possessing a Beast Drive of their own. Alternatively, the player can instead activate Hyper Beast mode, which vastly increases the player’s attack power and speed, as well as activating certain other abilities which are unique to each character. Hyper Beast mode is performed by pressing P+K+B together and slowly consumes the Beast gauge upon activation.
Unlike most fighting games, where sustained damage cannot be healed, Bloody Roar: Untamed allows players to slowly regain recoverable health, marked by a lighter greyish shade in the player’s life meter, by entering Beast mode. However, when the player is reverted back to human form, either by getting knocked down while the Beast gauge is empty, or using a Beast Drive or Hyper Beast mode, the player loses all of their recoverable health.
New gameplay mechanics have also been added, including "Beast Raves". Unlike its namesake, Beast Rave from the original Bloody Roar, which functions more similar to this game's Hyper Beast mode, Beast Raves in Bloody Roar: Untamed are instead special moves which can only be performed while in Beast mode. Beast Raves typically possess certain properties that make them highly ideal for combos. Each character haves three Beast Raves, each with their own unique button commands, and performing them costs 25% of the Beast gauge.
Another new addition is the inclusion of a "Guard Limiter", a mechanic borrowed from the Naruto: Clash of Ninja games, also by 8ing, where every defended attack would result in damage to the Guard Limiter, as shown by the white life bar border turning into a shade of red. A flashing red life bar border indicates that the Guard Limiter is in critical condition, after which the player must refrain from blocking and avoid attacks using other means, like dodging, or else the next attack that is blocked would result in a "Guard Crush" state, leaving the player wide-open for attack for a few seconds. The Guard Limiter is designed to discourage excessive "turtling" and make way for more offensive play.
Bouts in Bloody Roar: Untamed take place in 3D arenas that are enclosed with walls. At the end of the match, players can perform a devastating attack that can send their opponents crashing into the walls and flying onto the distance, in a matter not too dissimilar to Sega’s Fighting Vipers. Like in Bloody Roar 3, certain stages have walls or floors that can be broken to reveal further fighting areas.
For the first time in the series, Bloody Roar: Untamed features real-time clothing damage, where rips, tears and shreds on the character’s clothing caused by transforming into their Beast form are reflected onto their human form and carry over throughout the rest of the match. A character customization feature is also included in the game, albeit limited to attaching small trinkets onto their character, altering the color of their clothes and buying one-and-done alternate costumes, most likey due to the aforementioned clothing damage.
The game also includes blood effects when players hit each other, which are then reflected on the stage’s floor and on the character’s clothing and body before fading after a few seconds. However, while the game features blood, the game is not as gory as other fighting games like Mortal Kombat, and does not include any form of on-screen decapitation, gameplay-wise (though there are several implications of violence within the story).
Story[]
Zoanthropes. Human beings who possess the uncanny ability to metamorphose into other animals by means of shapeshifting. For as long as humanity had existed, zoanthropes have coexisted alongside humans. Some zoanthropes choose to live normal lives, while others opt to put their skills to good use. It was because of their perceived "irregularities" that zoanthropes were oppressed and hated by the humans. Because of this, some zoanthropes chose to seclude themselves from humanity, while others choose to hide their abilities in secrecy, away from the judging eyes of others.
Throughout all of this, one company seeks to use zoanthropes for their own uses: Tylon Corporation, founded by Dr. Charles Moreau Tylon Ph.D. For years, Tylon has used zoanthropes for various unethical experiments, some of which include forced zoanthrope conversion, brainwashing and cloning. Over the years, several rights groups, written publications and even government entities such as the Interpol have tried to take down Tylon Corporation and expose the truth of their inhumane experiments and human rights violations to the masses, but so far, none have proven to be fruitful.
One day, a group of mercenaries known as the "Beastorizers", which consisted of three notorious zoanthropes: Alan Gado, Yuji Ogami and Boris Medvedev, have been sent on a mission to destroy Tylon’s headquarters. However, what was going to be a simple search and destroy operation turned out to be a suicide mission. Despite this, none of them backed down, and so Gado, Yuji and Medvedev fought Tylon’s forces tooth and nail, only to end up getting utterly curb-stomped. The ordeal ended with Gado barely surviving, Yuji dying and Medvedev getting captured and presimably killed. Since then, Gado swore revenge against Tylon, and made it his sole reason to take the company down, no matter what. However, knowing that he cannot do it alone, he decides to seek help from others.
It didn’t take too long before news of Yuji’s death had reached the ears of Yuji's immediate family: Yugo Ogami, a young and reckless youth who inherited his father’s feral instinct, harnessing it by learning the art of kickboxing, as well as Kenji, a mysterious amnesiac young boy whom Yuji had adopted after rescuing him from one of Tylon's facilities. Gado knew how valuable Yugo and Kenji's potential power would be for his quest and so, he decided to pay the two brothers a small visit.
One day, Gado visits the Ogami household to tell Yugo and Kenji, about Yuji’s final fate, as well as telling him that Tylon was the one behind his death. Finally, Gado offered Yugo a chance to avenge his father, by destroying Tylon Corporation through the only way he could: a zoanthrope uprising. Yugo, filled with extreme rage and primal fury, accepts Gado’s offer and, alongside Kenji, sets out on a journey to destroy Tylon, not only to avenge his father’s death, but also those of many others who have fallen victim to Tylon’s experiments.

- Yugo Ogami
Beast: Wolf
Voice Actors: Kengo Kawanishi (JP), Edward Bosco (EN)
Even during his younger years, the young wolf zoanthrope by the name of Yugo Ogami has always been a "wild child", a reckless and daring youth. The son of the feared zoanthrope mercenary Yuji Ogami, Yugo was trained in the art of kickboxing by his father, in hopes that proper discipline would help him control the power of his animalistic side.
One day, Yugo receives news from Yuji’s long-time partner, Alan Gado, that his father Yuji was killed in action by Tylon’s forces. Gado then offers him an opportunity to join him in a two-man siege on Tylon’s headquarters. His blood boiling with pure feral rage and a desire for revenge, Yugo accepts Gado’s offer and joins him in quest to destroy Tylon and find out the truth about Yuji’s ultimate demise.
- Alice Tsukagami
Beast: Rabbit
Voice Actresses: Aki Toyosaki (JP), Kayli Mills (EN)
As a child, Alice Tsukagami and her parents were kidnapped by Tylon and never seen again, while she herself was put into several experiments, forcibly converting her into a rabbit zoanthrope against her will. She managed to escape Tylon’s clutches without getting caught, but with no other family to fall back on, her only real ally left was Mitsuko Nonomura, who adopted and took care of her the same way that she did to her own daughter, Uriko.
Fast forward a few years later, Alice has grown up to be a kind-hearted and upbeat girl, now living a normal life with the Nonomura family, as well as a somewhat rocky relationship with her childhood friend Yugo Ogami. Alice never liked it whenever Yugo’s recklessness gets the better of him, so when she found out that Yugo was planning to destroy Tylon’s main headquarters out of revenge for his father, she was both furious and worried. Alice decides to set out to Tylon’s headquarters, in order to warn Yugo about the dangers that lie ahead.
- Alan Gado
Beast: Lion
Voice Actors: Tetsu Inada (JP), Bill Rogers (EN)
Known for his achievements in battle as well as his ferocity and notoriety as a lion zoanthrope, Alan Gado is one of the most feared mercenaries to ever set foot in the battlefield. One day, Gado, Yuji and Boris set out on a mission to gather intel about the company known as Tylon and their dubious practices, which turned out to be a futile suicide mission. Gado managed to escape, but Yuji and Boris weren’t so lucky, as they wound up getting killed by Tylon’s forces, which sent him in a rampage for revenge, destroying one Tylon branch after another. With only one branch left in his crosshairs, Gado then sought out to seek out Yuji’s children, to help him exact his revenge by destroying Tylon, not just for his fallen comrades, but for all the others who were victims of Tylon.
- Jin Long
Beast: Tiger
Voice Actors: Daisuke Namikawa (JP), Kaiji Tang (EN)
Following the death of his mother and sister at his own hands after he was unable to control his zoanthrope powers, the tiger zoanthrope Jin Long ran away from home, and became an outcast. One day, Tylon discovered Long’s impressive powers as a zoanthrope, and offered him a chance to work for them, to which Long, unsure of how to use the powers that he has, unwittingly accepted the deal.
From there, Long used his zoanthrope abilities to become an assassin for Tylon, at first not realizing the immorality behind his actions, until one day, he was tasked to eradicate a defenseless family of zoanthropes. After witnessing the lone surviving child crying in front of his slain parents, Long realized the wrongs in his actions, and separated himself from Tylon, dedicating the rest of his life to atone for his own sins, and grew to resent his zoanthropy. But before he could rest easy, Long must set out on a journey to destroy Tylon once and for all, for to him, it is the only way to repent.
- Hans "Fox" Taubemann
Beast: Fox
Voice Actors: Shouta Aoi (JP), Kayleigh McKee (EN)
There are two words that best describe the fox zoanthrope Hans Taubemann, more commonly known by their nom de guerre "Fox": effeminate, and sadistic. Born and raised in the streets, Fox developed an obsession with beauty and death, something that would catch the attention of Tylon when they decided to hire them as an assassin.
Fox was originally hesitant to join Tylon, as it would mean exposing themselves to their zoanthrope form more often, something that they detest and decry as "ugly". However, tempted by Tylon’s promise of "an unlimited amount of targets to eliminate", Fox eventually agrees to join them. Eager for new prey, Fox awaits for their new target, ready to strike and kill as the right time comes.

Beast: Leopard
Voice Actresses: Ami Koshimizu (JP), Morgan Berry (EN)
One night, during a mission, Gado and his comrades found a young war orphan who called herself "Shina" near their barracks, seemingly needing shelter to sleep on. Out of pity for the young child, who lost her home and her parents in the middle of the war, Gado opted to take Shina under his custody and raise him as his own daughter.
As years went by, Shina grew up to become a strong mercenary, where she proved to be as formidable as her foster father Gado, eventually earning the nickname "the Fighting Marvel" after taking down a large platoon on her own, though deep inside, she holds a small grudge against him because of his busy life and how he wasn’t able to spend more time with her. One day, she heard about Gado’s plans to destroy Tylon and how he didn’t tell Shina anything about it, something that she mistook as him doubting her abilities, which made Shina furious. Thus, Shina decides to seek and destroy Tylon on her own to prove Gado her abilities and hopefully give him a piece of her mind.
- Kenji "Bakuryu" Ogami
Beast: Mole
Voice Actors: Mutsumi Tamura (JP), Casey Mongillo (EN)
Kenji Ogami first came into Yugo’s life as an amnesiac pre-teen who was rescued from a facility run by Tylon Corporation by his father Yuji, who decided to adopt him as his son. Since then, Kenji has lived a peaceful, simple life with the Ogamis, with nary any problem in his mind, until Yuji's death.
Unbeknownst to them, Kenji is actually "Bakuryu", successor of the Kato clan, a notorious clan of ninja zoanthropes. In his obsession for power, the clan’s patriarch, the late Ryuzo Kato, a.k.a. the original Bakuryu, sold his entire clan to Tylon against their will in exchange for more power, turning each of them, including Ryuzo himself, into fearsome genetically-modified zoanthrope assassins. After hearing about Yugo and Gado’s plans on a two-man siege on Tylon’s headquarters, Kenji decides to join them in their quest for revenge as well, not knowing about the danger that lies ahead, and the secrets within him that were once thought to be buried.
- Jenny Burtory
Beast: Bat
Voice Actresses: Miyuki Sawashiro (JP), Lisa Ortiz (EN)
Much of the identity of the woman who goes by the name of "Jenny Burtory" remains a mystery, with rumors about her ranging from being part of an experiment that made her ageless, to being a real-life vampire. What little is known about of her is that she currently moonlights as a supermodel, in order to obfuscate her real occupation: a covert spy.
Having met the mercenary Alan Gado more than a few years ago, during one of his first missions with the Beastorizers, the two have worked together on various top secret mission since, and have shared mutual, if largely platonic, trust with each other. One day, Jenny was invited by Gado to embark on a special mission, unlike any other mission that she’s taken before: to find more intel about the shady conglomerate known as Tylon Corporation, and destroy it from the inside, if necessary. Intrigued by the company’s long line of dubious activity, Jenny slips in the middle of the night to begin her mission.
- Hajime Busuzima
Beast: Chameleon
Voice Actors: Takashi Kondo (JP), River Kanoff (EN)

Eventually, when his grandmother passed away from a terminal disease, his obsession with the idea of immortality began, and so does his slow descent into madness.
Many years later, Busuzima was hired by Tylon corporation, and from there, he began his long line of experiments, including multiple kidnappings of test subjects, both human and zoanthrope, turning the rogue scientist Steven Goldberg into the man-made zoanthrope "Stun", and creating a clone of the defector Jin Long, whom he christened as "Shenlong". Around this time period, Busuzima began conducting several experiments on himself, turning him into a chameleon zoanthrope. Soon, hearing about the plans of a siege against Tylon conducted by a bunch of zoanthropes, Busuzima decides to put his new zoanthrope powers to the ultimate test and sets his foot on the battlefield.
- Steven "Stun" Goldberg
Beast: Insect
Voice Actors: Atsushi Miyauchi (JP), Eddie Correa Jr. (EN)
Once a zealous scientist who dedicated his life's work for Tylon Corporation, Steven Goldberg took massive pride in his discoveries, convinced that his research would eventually be used to save people’s lives in the future. Something that turned out to be, in reality, the exact opposite, much to his horror.
However, before Steven could speak up about Tylon’s practices, he was forcibly used, against his will, as a living specimen to create the very first man-made zoanthrope, a project spearheaded by his former colleague Hajime Busuzima. The various experiments done on his body would eventually turn him into Stun, an insectoid zoanthrope, but because of his unstable genetic structure, he is only able to survive with a special stabilizer, which he had developed to retain his body. With a body that’s close to decay, and a mind full of revenge, Stun seeks to destroy Tylon, and kill Busuzima, the man who turned him into what he is now.
- Uriko Nonomura
Beast: Half-Beast (Cat)
Voice Actresses: Rina Hidaka (JP), Kira Buckland (EN)
At the tender age of 9 years old, Uriko Nonomura was kidnapped and made into a test subject for experiments by Tylon, who had plans to utilize her for "Project Uranus". She was successfully rescued by her mother Mitsuko, but the experiments on her were left unfinished, leaving her with an incomplete zoanthrope form; that of a "half-beast", retaining some of her human traits while gaining some feline-esque features from her dormant cat form.
A few years after the ordeal with Tylon, Uriko grew up with a normal, happy life with her mother Mitsuko and her adoptive sister Alice, with not a single problem in her mind. Until one day, while coming home from middle school, she saw her mother being beaten up and kidnapped by Tylon’s forces, and tries to defend her by fighting back at them, only to be outmatched. Not to be deterred, Uriko sets out on a journey to be stronger in order to rescue her mother from the clutches of Tylon.
- Shenlong
Beast: Black Tiger
Voice Actors: Daisuke Namikawa (JP), Xander Mobus (EN)
A man with no past, Shenlong was a clone created by Tylon to serve as a replacement for one of their former assassins, Jin Long. He was created by way of DNA cloning and was given the memories of the original Long, as well as a much more vicious counterpart of his zoanthrope form: the black tiger.
Shenlong picked up where the original Long left off, and continued his long line of killing and violence, slaughtering every target he is given without remorse. He tore through his given targets with his sheer strength and ruthlessness, like a wild tiger on the hunt, killing its prey with ease. After hearing about plans of a siege against Tylon, Shenlong was given the task to eliminate the opposition at all costs, but nothing could prepare him for what happens once he meets his real counterpart.
From Bloody Roar 3[]
- Kohryu
Beast: Iron Mole
Voice Actors: Shigeru Chiba (JP), Brian Stivale (EN)

Infamously, Ryuzo sold his entire clan to Tylon as test subjects for their inhumane experiments after he was promised to be given overwhelming power beyond any zoanthrope.
Unfortunately, the numerous and modifications done to Ryuzo’s body by Tylon caused his molecular structure to become unstable, which eventually culminated in his body decomposing into liquified tissue. Tylon, in response, decided to use his remains and battle data to create the next step in zoanthrope evolution: the cyber-zoanthrope Kohryu, the Iron Mole, a robot containing the traits and advantages of both robot and zoanthrope. Nearing the final stages in its development, Tylon decides to deploy Kohryu on a test run, but only time will tell if the experiment will be a success, or if something goes haywire in the process.

However, after several circumstances beyond his control, Reiji was able to break the seal before the coming of age ceremony, and the first thing he did with his newfound powers was to kill his father, one of the heads of the four clans, and flee the temple, rendering him a "rogue" member of the clan. Now free from the shackles of the Yatagarasu clan, Reiji seeks battle with some of the strongest zoanthropes in the world in order to satiate his lust for violence, while also running from the rest of the Yatagarasu clan in the process.

Everything changed, however, when one day, he would clash against a young Yugo Ogami in an unsanctioned match. Underestimating the young wolf's strength, he ended up losing the fight against Yugo, something he never got over from, but used as an inspiration to make himself much stronger. Now, having dedicated every ounce of his soul to settle the score, Ripper seeks to fight Yugo once again.

While horrified by what she had just done at first, it didn't take long before she began to adapt to her zoanthrope form and use it to slaughter those who bully her, culminating with Tylon finding out about her unique and fearsome zoanthrope form and killer instinct, eventually offering her a job as a Tylon assassin, which she accepts, under the pretense that she could kill all of the people who had wronged her in the past. - This game marks one of the few instances of an ACS fighting game that was released straight to home consoles, with no prior arcade release.
- Within the series itself, Untamed marks the third console-only installment in the series, following the spin-off Primal Fury/Extreme (2002), and the fourth game (2004)
- Due to the long gap between sequels, the entire Japanese voice cast from the fourth game has been completely recast with new voice actors.
- This would mark the first time that Hans "Fox" Taubemann was given a Japanese voice.
- The Japan-based English voice cast from the original game did not reprise their roles for Untamed. Instead, the game utilizes a brand new, Los Angeles-based voice cast.
- In keeping with the series’ tone, the game’s announcer (voiced by Bill Butts) would shift between a normal voice and a monster-like growling voice done through the use of filters.
- ACS has announced five DLC characters for Untamed, with two of them of them, Mitsuko and Greg, also being readily available as pre-order bonuses before being available for download.
