"When evil awakens in the Hartwood Mansion, horrors from another reality shall emerge, and all that shall be left to stand in their way are two unsuspecting individuals from across time itself.

In the 1920s, private detective Edward Carnby is hired to investigate and understand the mystery of the Hartwood Mansion following the mysterious suicide of its owner. Very soon realizing he was tricked into this quest and is now trapped inside with nowhere to escape, he is left with no choice but to continue to unravel the mystery of the manor, defending himself against a horde of otherworldly horrors as he tries to find a saving grace that may help him live to see the next sunrise. With no contact to the outside world and eldritch forces closing in, he is left alone, isolated in the darkness.

In the 2020s, young Emily Hartwood becomes the owner of the ancestral home of her family after the will of her great uncle grants her the haunted property. From the moment she enters the manor, she is sealed within, a new form of evil pursuing her as she scrambles for a path to freedom. Seeking freedom from the Hartwood family curse, she begins searching for any way to uncover the truth as to the original Hartwood man who founded the manor and save her family from the vile force that controls their destiny. She continues to fight, alone, with the forces of darkness ever approaching.

As the mysteries of the Hartwood family's past unravel and the truth is revealed, ancient secrets are exposed, and a plot from anotherworldly forces becomes apparent as these two complete strangers are forced to fight for their lives as reality itself falls apart before their eyes. Trapped with nowhere to go, and with only each other rely on despite being in completely separate versions of the Hartwood Mansion, divided by time and space. Locked away, with nowhere to go, and with only one thing known for certain.

Alone in the Dark, also referred to as Alone in the Dark: One, is a survival horror game concept by Red-Verse-Writer, a remake of the 1992 survival horror game Alone in the Dark and the third game to attempt to reboot the series following the 2001 game Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare and the 2008 game simply known as Alone in the Dark.

Gameplay[]

Alone in the Dark: One is a third-person survival horror game in which the player takes control of two characters at separate times - Edward Carnby, a private detective and occultist who in the 1920s is hired to investigate Hartwood Mansion and becomes trapped within by supernatural forces, and Emily Hartwood, the teenage heiress to the mansion in the 2020s who also enters the mansion and encounters the eldritch beings that haunt it as she seeks to end her family's curse. The game is played from a third-person fixed camera perspective similar to Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, with the player venturing through the Hartwood Mansion and its surrounding areas as they try to find a way out and unravel the mystery of the manor. To do so, players must solve puzzles, explore the manor and the nearby areas for clues, and defend themselves against various enemies.

During the segments in which control is switched between Carnby and Hartwood, different areas of the Hartwood Mansion are available or unavailable, and different puzzles must be completed. Inventory in the game is very limited, and determined by both the number of items and the combined weight of these items. The two characters have different advantages over the other - Carnby can carry more weight than Hartwood, can withstand more damage from attacks, and does more damage with ranged attacks, while Hartwood is able to carry more items by number than Carnby, runs faster, and does more damage with melee attacks. Items can be examined from the inventory, combined with others, or used directly in puzzles. Closets scattered around the Hartwood Mansion are used to store items, while a special pendant known as the Charm of Recollection are used to save the game at any time anywhere so long as it is charged.

Storyline[]

Alone in the Dark begins with the suicide of renowned artist Jeremy Hartwood in his mansion on the privately owned Shadow Isle, a isolated island off the coast of Massachusetts at a undisclosed point in the 1920s. While the police attempt to cover up his death, Jeremy's niece hires private detective Edward Carnby to investigate the mansion and find a antique piano which she believes contains a note in which Jeremy will explain his suicide. Carnby heads to Shadow Isle to investigate, and upon entering the Hartwood Mansion finds himself trapped inside, with creatures seemingly made of shadow attacking him. Defending himself as he proceeds through the mansion, he eventually enters the loft and finds the piano and with it the upper half of Jeremy Hartwood's suicide note, in which it is mentioned that Jeremy ended his own life to prevent himself from becoming a host to "them".

A full century later, at a similarly undisclosed point in the 2020s, the Hartwood family come together to hear the reading of the will of David Hartwood, great-nephew of Jeremy Hartwood. In the will, David names his great-niece Emily, the great-granddaughter of the niece who hired Edward Carnby, as the owner of the Hartwood Mansion and with it Shadow Island. At the request of her family, Emily travels to Shadow Island to investigate the property, and soon becomes stranded on the island during a mysterious monsoon, forcing her to seek shelter within the Hartwood Mansion. While inside, she finds herself trapped inside and hunted by humanoid creatures, forcing her to locate weaponry and begin fighting her way to one of the mansion's cellars.
